The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

I went for the real deal with my Schott's 740N Pea Jacket. I scoured the net looking for a real winter coat and I saw the navy surplus and the cheaper coats, however, I decided not to skimp. This coat is quality through the roof in respect to the materials and construction.. I have found the sizing to be spot on as I am a 43 chest and went up to a 44 so I could wear a sweater or sweatshirt, it is a perfect fit. As soon as I placed the order I regretted not going with the black instead of the traditional navy blue, no worries, the navy is very close to black.. My next Schott's coat will be one of their moto jackets.

After hunting for a decent jacket for weeks, I came across a Schott peacoat in a vintage clothing store in town. It wasn't the right size (38) but I immediately loved how it felt and how warm and comfortable it was. I decided to order one for myself and it looks andffeels good. So so good! I'm a 41/42 in chest sizing. I was advised by the customer service representative to sized down to a 40. Get this peacoat, you won't regret it!

Warm, almost too warm. The coat I got was a little big on me, but I am also quite skinny so I don't think that is a good argument to how good it is. I think It is a good and sturdy coat. Very comfy and does what I bought it to do.

Size 42 fits my 5'11" (slightly paunchy) frame perfectly. Waist, shoulders, sleeves are right on
The cloth and the color are exactly what I wanted.

    VERY cool appearance.

Just received my peacoat in India, and while i cant vouch for the warmth yet as the weather is hot as hell, but i can see how thick the wool is and beautifully made the coat is. Going by what the others have said, it should be very warm and cozy. I can say it fits well, and looks so expensive! I wore it over both casual clothing and my suit, and i look great! Regarding sizing, i was recommended 38 by Denise, but i could have gone for 36 for a slim fit. The 38 works for me since i intend to wear it over my suit jacket, and then the fit is perfect. I guess its all about knowing your needs. I found the shoulder width on the garment longer than what was mentioned in the spec sheet. Size 38 was mentioned as 18.25", but it actually measure close to 19". Like i said, over a suit jacket it fits perfect and i am very happy with it. For reference, my stats are - shoulders 18", chest 39", weight 72 kg, height 5', 8". All in all, wonderful investment.

I'm 5'7 with a stocky athletic build. This peacoat in size 34R fits me like a tailored suit and looks fantastic to boot. My chest is 40 inches and my shoulders are 18 inches. It fits snugly at the shoulders, so if you're similar to my dimensions, don't expect to be wearing this over a suit comfortably.

However, despite my overall enjoyment of the product, I would like to mention that the buttons came loose right out of the package, which seems to be a common consensus among other reviews. I do hope Schott does something about it as I had to re-sew all of my buttons right out of the packaging for fear that they drop off (there are no replacement buttons included). None of the button's thread was secured and it came loose with a single tug. Not what I expect from Schott's attention to detail.

Also, as an international customer, it would be great if Schott could include an option for cheaper international shipping. I wouldn't mind waiting a few weeks if it meant that I didn't have to pay $130usd++ for 3 day shipping. Overall a great product. Looks great in dark oxford grey.

I’m 5’ 10” and 165 pounds of Dad bod and a size 38 fit perfectly with room for layering! This coat is built for a lifetime. I’ve been eyeing it for years and finally pulled the trigger and wish I did it sooner. 10 times the cost of my Lands End pea coat!

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
