The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

MY THIRD SCHOTT JACKET, MY FIRST PEACOAT

Published: Sun, 1/10/2021 by Robert Rivera

I bought the 740 as a gift for myself to celebrate 2021. I already own the 257S (B-3 Bomber) so I really didn’t need another winter jacket. However, the B-3 is not good for the occasional rainy day.

Anyway, this is my third Schott jacket. I never owned a peacoat before but I knew Schott jackets were quality so I was not hesitant to get this. I absolutely love this peacoat. I got the New Navy color because I didn’t want something too dark; however, even the New Navy almost looks black, unless it’s a very sunny day where the Navy color can shine.

The jacket has two inside pockets, one on each side. The two outside pockets are deeper than I expected, but is a huge plus. As for the sizing of this jacket, I normally wear medium-sized shirts/jackets. I am 5’8, about 160 pounds, and have a 39” chest, I usually prefer slimmer fits for jackets, so I sized down to a 36 for this, which is perfect. Schott jackets tend to run bigger on me.

This jacket goes extremely well with a pair of leather gloves. I like to wear my Fratelli Orsini gloves with this. Not only do they help keep me warm, but the outfits are perfect. I usually wear this with a pair of Red Wing boots too.

Anyway this jacket is beautiful. It’s not comparable to the 257S in terms of keeping you extremely warm, but it is definitely good in cold weather (as long as it’s not extremely windy). If you’re considering getting this, it definitely is worth a purchase.

    AMERICAN BEAUTY

Published: Sun, 1/10/2021 by Adrian B.

Three years ago I bought my first 740 peacoat, in dark Oxford. I wanted one in navy, but foolishly ordered one in dark Oxford. When I tried it on I immediately knew I had to keep it, just excellent. The next year I thought of the navy again, but ordered black instead. Again, I kept the coat, just too nice to return. Finally, after weeks of hesitating, I ordered the third peacoat in navy. Don't know why I have three of the exact model. This coat is outstanding, for the price the best winter coat out there. It will keep you warm, with a sweater, or a light to medium fleece you are good for polar exploration. It will protect you against snow, cold rain, sleet, freezing damp weather etc. It is stylish, roomy and well-tailored.
Remember, the navy and black are almost indistinguishable, unless you hold them against the bright sunlight.

A classic. A throwback to when clothing was made to last. As previously, customer service in determining size was exceptional.

AN AMERICAN MADE GEM OF A COAT

Published: Tue, 12/29/2020 by John Quaine

My wife got me this coat for Christmas and I love it. I'm 6'2, 180Ilbs. and the 42L, 740N fit me perfectly. This American made gem of a coat is high quality! It has inside pockets (great place for a cell phone) and the heavily quilted lining, paired with the wool external shell ensures you will be warm as toast because the wind doesn't penetrate it. I live in Michigan and was pumping gas the other night in 22 degree weather. I had the massive collar up covering my ears and buttoned all 5 buttons all the way to the top, which felt very comfortable.

Plus, I was surprised how fast we received it. Schott N.Y.C. handles the shipping costs and they FedEx'd it; arriving in plenty of time before Christmas!

    NICE QUALITY

Published: Sun, 12/27/2020 by Carlos Maldonado

Feels good on you and keeps you warm. I took the advice of the rep a ordered a size down. It worked out.
The only thing I noticed but anticipated, was the sleeve length that runs long. When your arms are at your side, the sleeves run past your palms. This is typical in coats I've worn in the past however, I was hoping I wasn't going to experience this with this coat.
Overall I like the look and feel of the wool. A nice coat to consider.

Wow! This one very good peacoat and though expensive , it’s worth the money. This heavy coat is designed to look stylish but most important , it will keep you warm. I am 6’ , 200 lbs with a 45” chest. I chose a size 44 and it fits very well. Highly recommend this peacoat because you won’t be disappointed.

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
