Style 740 is an 80/20 wool/nylon blend.  Whereas the wool provides significant warmth, the nylon adds strength and durability to the fabric.

The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

I would like to begin this review by stating how much I adore the 740 Peacoat. I like it so much, that it is my favorite winter coat. I love a heavily insulated coat that also looks beautiful; the Schott 740 Peacoat is that coat. It provides the warmth and comfort you need even in the cold winters of high latitudes such as where I live in the Pacific Northwest. And when the weather warms up or when you enter a warm vehicle or building, it is so easy to unbutton and remove this coat. When wearing this coat, I find myself so warm that I almost never need to wear a mid layer in the middle of winter with perhaps only needing a mid layer for those times while in a stationary position outside in the cold when I'm not moving much.

Now that I have demonstrated my adoration of the 740 Peacoat, I would like to provide feedback on the improvements I would like to see that would make this coat even better. My only negative comment about this coat is that the current color selection that this peacoat is offered in is not very “fun." For example, I purchased this peacoat in the color, “new navy," but I am not able to purchase this coat in much different colors than two variants of grey, black and two variants of a navy color. A more complete color selection for this peacoat would include shades of red, burgundy, beige, camel and grey. It is possible to find this peacoat in different colors from third party sellers like eBay, but these “vintage” peacoats manufactured decades ago in the 1980s to 1990s are becoming harder to come by. I would love to see the 740 Peacoat be available in more colors. I suggest that Schott replaces their two variants of grey and navy, which variants are so similar and hardly much different anyway, with shades of red, burgundy, beige, or camel. Thank you.

This jacket is simply amazing. However, I had to return mine due to the size. It runs a bit big; I ordered a size 40, but it fits more like a 42 or 44. I'll be exchanging it for a slim-fit jacket instead. The quality is truly unparalleled.

My son is over the moon with his peacoat. High quality, great features, even more than we hoped for (and he even loves the enclosed stickers too). Well done Schott.

The quality and attention to design of my jacket was excellent. I also like the fact that it was delivered on a hanger. One thing I didn't like is the sleeves are too long for my female frame. I am going to cuff the sleeves and wear it as a fashion choice - that is what the jacket means to me. When I am done, I am giving to my son who was in the navy. He is going to love his Mom!

When I lived in NYC I owned a peacoat so I know how beneficial they can be during the winter. It will be perfect for the chilly Irish weather. It also looks good. The coat I purchased from your company is made from high-quality wool. I ordered it on Wednesday afternoon and it arrived here in Dublin on Friday morning - really great service. Thank you.

Super-chuffed with your 740N Peajacket. Very robust quality feeling material which feels superior to other reefers. Followed the digital size guide which advised a 44, ordered a 44 and it fits perfect. Not too fitted but not boxy and hanging off me. Trialled it with a thick woolen jumper and it fits fine. Feels like it will last a long while. You get what you pay for! Ordered it direct from the USA and even with the customs fees etc it fairs very competitively with the other top-end reefers in the UK. Well done Schott

It's a bit too baggy of a fit but it seems like good material. It would just be nice to be able to have it fit more to size

I’m pretty in love with mine. Thought about getting the 764 but it’s not worth it when you do the math. 740 is 80/20 32oz, 764 is 100% 28oz. The math is 80/20 has about 25oz wool 6oz nylon. The extra 3oz of wool wasn’t worth the extra $195 which is an 43% increase in cost. Plus the 80/20 is more durable, longer, heavier, and has the quilted liner that the 764 doesn’t have. If you’re a purist and you just want 100% to be able to say you have it then the 764 is for you. If you ask me you’re getting a better deal with the 740 as far as price and performance. Lesser price doesn’t mean lesser quality. They’re same quality

First time I buy something from Schott. I love the jacket. Really well made. I'm 6,6 tall and weight 214 lb. The 44L fits perfect (body and sleeves). I have one from Private White and other from Billy Reid and this one fits me better.

It looks fantastic but feels lighter than the exact one I got from you all 25 years ago. In that time I think the materials have updated . I do like the feel of the heavier jacket from before, but the lines on this new one look a bit more aesthetic and sleek.Another winner, thank you.

This is just a seriously well made coat that uses quality materials. I'm seriously impressed at the value for $. Wool is stiff out of the box, but it will break with use. It, however, is three Cs thiccc, made to take an absolute beating keep you *warm*, and insulated from the conditions.

Stitching is robust, and then reinforced for extra durability. Buttons are double stitched, so them falling off (as happens on a lot of peacoats, or double breasted coats/jackets in general) looks like it won't be an issue for a longgggg time. Can be dressed up or down, and will for sure look as great over a grey suit as it does over the jeans and sweater I'm wearing.

Got it on a rainy, windy, and borderline below freezing day, and immediately went for a walk to test it. Performed amazingly. Warm and toasty af inside, with zero wind penetration. Size estimator that was on the website was bang on. Do not deviate from it. Zero need to downsize, if you'd like to still be able to fit a sweater underneath and maintain range of motion. If you want a more tailored fit, buy the slim, but I'd question the ability to layer with it (i.e. only buy the slim if you live a bit more south, or don't mind freezing your dick off in -30C Canadian winters from lack of layering).

Only wish I have is for a "short" option as the 46" regular size I purchased will require some tailoring to bring up the sleeves, and the length, by about 1.5-2 inches each for a fully proper fit on my 5'9"/185 frame. I can definitely understand why people refer to this as a "heirloom" piece, though. It's easy to see that this thing is built like a frickin' dreadnought, and that it will only get better with age and wear. If you are waffling between something a little less expensive (say, the LL Bean Peacoat), then do yourself a favour: Save your pennies, and wait to buy this one.

Warm & Look Good

If you’re on the fence about buying this coat…just get it. It’s great for temperatures down to the fahrenheit teens, the collar is tall and blocks the wind, it looks awesome, and it’s really well made. By far my favorite coat; I’m wearing the heck out of it.

For sizing, trust the digital tailor. It was spot on for being roomy enough to comfortably layer, and it looks just right for a t-shirt underneath. It was very accurate.

One serious coat

After several years of waiting for Schott to put these coats on sale, I finally gave in and bought one at full price about two months ago. This is a good example of a clothing item being worth paying full price. I've previously owned peacoats from J.Crew and Spier & Mackay, and this peacoat is much better. It is an excellent blend of function and style.

Although this isn't the "slim fit" version of this coat, it isn't a loose, boxy fit. I'm 5'9", about 165 lbs, and Schott recommended that I buy a size 38. It has a slight hourglass shape and is fairly form-fitting. So, if you want some extra room such as to wear it over a suit or additional thick layers, I recommend going a size up. The sleeves were a little too baggy and long, so I took the coat to the tailor to get that corrected.

The coat can be buttoned on either side. Also, the large collar can be buttoned up around your head for using in inclement weather which is very useful. There is no interior button to secure the inside flap of the double-breasted front, but it doesn't seem like a big deal. I haven't had any trouble with the inside flap sagging. The hand warmer front pockets provide some extra depth to carry items, such as your phone or keys. There are also two large interior pockets.

The coat is very warm. The heavy material (80% wool/20% synthetic) plus the quilted interior lining in the torso and sleeves provides heavy insulation. I wore this coat with only a shirt and thin sweater underneath in 16F and I was not cold. In fact, this coat is so warm that I don't recommend wearing it in temperatures over about 45F or you'll probably be too hot.

The material is quite heavy and stiff which makes it difficult to raise your arms above shoulder level. So, I don't think it's a good coat for certain activities like long-distance driving. I think it's more of a "wearing-around-town" kind of coat, which it is very suited for. Because it is double-breasted, it gives you more "presence" and you'll notice more people looking at you as a result.
