This is an impressive coat and it is clearly well constructed. I wear a size 40 US coat and the 790 size large is right for me. It fits well over a sport coat and still looks good with only a shirt. I prefer 100% wool but this fabric is very nice and most people will appreciate that it has a smoother hand than Mackinaw wool, for example.
The only improvement that could be made is either for the liner to be made of a better fabric than nylon (e.g. cupro), or for only the sleeves to be lined so it’s still easy to put on and remove. Lining a wool coat with polyester undermines wool’s natural ability to breathe while insulating. The coat would not block wind as effectively, but for me this trade off is worth it because layering is better than wearing one outer layer that traps heat… and moisture.
If you can only own one wool coat, buy one that is totally unlined or has a liner that is more breathable than polyester; it will be more comfortable across a wider range of conditions. Having said that, this coat is perfect in every other respect and I am glad to have it.
Response from Schott NYC: Your comments kindly received, and noted. A natural fiber lining would likely be more breathable, but we feel that there are other elements to consider:
Cupro belongs to the family of semi-synthetics made from processed cellulose ( plant fibre ). The concept is to make a synthetic version silk. The group includes rayon/viscose, modal, acetate and lyocell. The manufacturing process requires that the raw cellulose is completely broken down and mixed with a 'binder' in solution, then spun into a filament. The resulting fiber has high absorbtion, but low elasticity, and the strength and durability are limited by the binder used.
In comparison, polyester is one of the most durable fibers available, and can have a comparatively soft hand in a woven fabric. It is cost effective, yet will outlast even silk.
We make all our material selections based on a series of ( sometimes competing ) considerations, not least of which is durability. A lining made from our polyester twill will outlast any comparable cellulosic based alternative by a significant margin. It may double the usable life of the garment, or more.
I was very pleased with my purchase of this coat. Not only does it keep out the cold (including chilling winds) but it is also very cut, and very stylish.
This will be my 5th article purchased at Schott. The fit and feel of this coat is remarkable. I live in the cold and wet of Wash. state. The Naval Officers coat cuts right through it. Highly recommended.
Absolutely awesome coat, fits like a glove. Great quality, you will be truly satisfied. I’ve tried designer brand coats that were double the price and returned them. This coat will compliment anything you wear and it’s warm.
This coat is just perfect. The wool is soft and doesnt restrain my movements like thicker peacoats do in my experience. The fit is just right and the design is spotless.
