I bought this in a large black and it was too big, but decided to keep it and maybe gift it down the road and ordered a medium a few weeks ago which fit amazingly, almost perfect but the color didn’t seem right. Forward to today I’ve had 3 people ask me if it’s dark brown or espresso and after holding it up to my other Schotts (including the large 654) it isn’t black, not true black anyways. I figured I’d call and ask if it was a mistake or if there was an issue with the QC (it’s a $900 jacket I figured Schott would be more willing to help) and I was asked a few questions, told it was black and if I didn’t like the color to order some leather dye and dye it… like, this was a short convo, I wasn’t rude or anything it was just so straight to “well if it’s not black enough order insertnameofproducthere from Amazon and dye it… so now I got a coat that’s not black, I’m out $900+ and they want me to spend more money and even worse my time on dying a brand new jacket… I just ordered my first vanson today to replace it, I’m totally let down by Schott. I own a few and love them greatly (they truly are amazing) but this was my first time calling customer service and at $900 a pop I’d expect more out of Schott and their CS and QC teams
Response from Schott NYC: At Schott, we take pride in the craftsmanship of our leather jackets, each of which is made from natural materials that can sometimes vary slightly in color due to their unique characteristics. While we strive for consistency, leather, being a natural product, can indeed have subtle variations in shade - including many shades of black. This natural variability is part of what makes each jacket unique and adds to its character over time.
We understand your preference for a more dark black tone and recognize that our previous suggestion to use a product to darken the leather may not have been the ideal solution for you. While this method can enhance the color, we completely understand if it was not the response you were hoping for.
Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we apologize if the jacket didn’t meet your expectations in this regard. We're always here to help, so please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or if we can assist you in any other way.
180cm and 59kg (5'11" and 130lb) and I bought an XS. The 654 is a great fit for my very lanky body type. Tried other jackets but they look too boxy on me. Have room for a thick jumper and long sleeve shirt underneath this. It's my go-to jacket now and miles ahead of my previous pleather jacket. The black leather looks fantastic, even better than the photos-not too shiny and not too matte, just right. Very happy that it is made in the USA.
I originally ordered this jacket in a small
and was a bit too big. I went to the LA store and was having an issue finding my size in a jacket. They had this jacket in a extra small and it fit really good, but was not in good condition and they said they needed to condition it. Then I tried the vintage 654, which was an amazing jacket, unfortunately the sleeve length was too small, in a medium and the small. Then I was deciding between other jackets and went with the 554. I kind of regret it because the sleeve width is a bit baggy on me and already is marked final sale and I took the tags off but still have them. The 654 is an amazing jacket and should have just ordered it in an extra small, or maybe kept the small. Schott NYC has the best looking jackets I have ever seen, although if you are thin, then it can be a challenge finding the right size. Make sure if you purchase a jacket from here, you calculate your measurements correctly, because these jackets all fit differently and are either a slim fit or regular.
I have been looking for this jacket for years after I found it in a men's store that only carried a small. A year after, I mistakenly bought the wrong model: 654VN. The vintage is a beautiful jacket, to be sure, but because of the vintaging process, the sizing/fit is a bit uneven across the jacket so I ultimately decided to buy the one I had originally tried on: the 654.
I was right: the jacket falls beautifully from the neck down to the edge of your shoulders, and from the clavicle down through your abdomen (while open). If you're slimmer (5'7", 130 lbs), this is the jacket for you. It will not look boxy, and, if you got the right size, will close comfortably without any pull across the upper chest. The jacket is very stiff at first, but it's cowhide and you're supposed to have this for years. After 1-2 years, it'll feel more like its built for my body.
The jacket also isn't as glossy as the images look. Can't figure out why Schott pictures on the website don't truly show the color. Anyway, they always look better in person. Fixtures are beautiful and have a lifetime warranty.
I bought two of the same size for comparison because it's leather and each jacket will fit differently. I settled on one that had a more even texture, fell on my body better.
If you're a slimmer guy, average or just below average height and don't have insanely broad shoulders, this jacket will look beautiful. Denise was also helpful with questions!
Beautiful coat, wonderful craftsmanship. The only complaint i have is that the lining is polyester, for the price something more natural would be nice, at this point im nitpicking though.
I overcame my wife's objection ("Oh no. Not another black leather jacket!") and I'm glad I did. Great leather, perfect fit, and speedy free overnight delivery. I couldn't be more pleased with the whole experience! Know that while the styling is definitely motorcycle, this jacket is more of a casual wear about town piece. No shoulder gussets make for a slim trim profile at the expense of performance on a bike for example.
Just received my jacket. Unfortunately... once again - no magic in this world. You get what you paid for. I have tried all kinds of cafe racer style jackets from many manufacturers, and SchottNYC is still the best you can get. Pricey, but again... you get what you paid for. Simply top notch.
If this can help someone... I am 6'2/220 lbs, 45 inch chest, 33 inch waist, relatively long arms (36-37 dress shirt sleeves) . Ordered size L. Fits snugly (as I want it to fit) and the sleeves are about 3/4 of an inch shorter than I wanted them to be. However, the sleeves will stretch a bit over time. Should fit perfectly.
This jacket is gorgeous. I was so disappointed that it didn't fit right for motorcycle riding. If it had gusseted arms it would have been absolutely perfect.
The 654 is a beauty for sure but you have to be weary on the fit. The leather is stiff and will need to be broken in, which was no problem to me. It is slim, yes, but it is also a Eruo cut which means the chest/shoulders will be small. If you are 5'7" 170lbs in athletic shape, this jacket is not for you. I feel this jacket is designed for someone who is slim with very little muscle mass. Slim doesn't necessarily mean tight fit. It means no width as well. I tried both XL and Large. Large fit my hips and waist but was too tight in the shoulders/chest and biceps. I literally couldn't move. The XL was a good fit in the shoulders and chest but everything else was too large. I have since returned both and received my 530 which was a perfect fit in Large. I wish the 654 can in an american cut with the same leather as the 530 with the bi-fold option.
If what you want is a classic real leather jacket this is a great product. But really only if you want specifically a classic leather jacket, there are characteristics of the jacket you should expect going in.
1. It comes stiff as hell. It also fits a bit slim (as its supposed to). So before it breaks in, range of motion is resisted by the leather.
2. It has that old fashion black color, I don't know exactly how to discribe it other than traditional black leather jacket color. There's like a ever so slightly yellowish tinge to it. Photos dipict it decent enough.
3. Its not particularly warm. Leather itself is not a significant insulator and there is no other noteable lining.
4. Its thick leather, even when broken in it won't "flow" like some suede thats been sanded/trimed. This leads to a more substancial feel imo, but its less flexable. It also weighs a decent amount.
My only complaint would probably be the arm zippers coming undone too easily. Happens just by itself too easily. But a careful spec of locktite fixed it for me.
