The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

    GREAT PEACOAT SIZE 34

    Published: Mon, 10/3/2022 by Stefan

Tok the risk to order a pea coat because I’m living in Norway and it’s difficult and especially expensive to return if wrong size. So I carefully read the reviews and figured out which size could fit. So I was very excited when it was delivered.

Ordered a size 34 and I’m 175 and 67 kg. Fits great and the sleeves are perfect and not too long at all. I can wear a t short or wool pullover without having it too tight.

All I can say is wow! The quality is outstanding, it's truly winter-weight, the sizing is perfect, shipping was crazy fast - and free - and the price was entirely fair, even more than fair for this beautiful coat. I am truly impressed.

    OUTSTANDING QUALITY

    Published: Wed, 7/20/2022 by David

    Folks,
Let me cut to the chase. This review is for those folks that are in between sizes or close to in between. I am 6' 2" tall, and my weight ranges between 205 and 215 pounds, depending on the time of year. I am 44 inches in the chest, I have a 38 inch waist, and I wear a 17.5-inch- inch, 36-inch dress shirt. My normal sport coat size is 46 or 46 long. I am 74 years old. I bought the 44 regular size style 740 peacoat, and it fit perfectly. I did NOT need the long or tall size, and the 46 would have been too large. I like my coats a little on the loose side, and it is perfectly sized so that I could wear a medium weight hoodie underneath if I needed too. While I currently live in northern Alabama, I spent six years in Newport, RI, and a lot of time in Camden, Maine, so I know what really cold weather is like. This peacoat is better than the one I was issued in 1967 at Navy Boot Camp. I had my first peacoat for 25 years until I went from a size 42 to a 44. I have no doubt this will be my last peacoat. Hope this review helps folks.

BEST COAT YOU WILL EVER OWN

Published: Mon, 5/2/2022 by Michael Texier

I can't recommend Schott's classic pea coat enough. This is the fourth one I've owned in my life of this particular coat. I love them so much I live in them every day until I wear them out and have to buy a new one. It would be a personal disaster if Schott stopped manufacturing this coat. It is versatile enough for most weather. It is airy enough that you don't feel stifled, but it is so well-woven that it's practically water proof and wind proof. It will get you through the coldest northeast winter days, and it looks fantastic with just about any outfit. It's an enduring classic for a reason. Get yourself one, and it will become your go-to coat year after year as well.

MY QUEST FOR THE PERFECT PEA COAT

    Published: Sat, 4/30/2022 by Jake

Investing in clothing online is not my favorite thing to do, my preference is to try things on. Having an athletic build (6’3” - 220 @ 14% BF), means wide shoulders/narrow waist/long arms. Almost impossible to find shirts & jackets that do not require tailoring. I really appreciated all the reviews that indicted the purchaser’s dimensions, the size they ordered, and the actual fit & function out of the box. The 46 34” Long 740 P/C that arrived 48 hours after ordering it, could not be a more perfect fit for me. The shoulder width is correct, the top shoulder seam perches itself at the end of the deltoid allowing the sleeves to extend past my watch, over the end of my gloves without travelling too far over down my hands. The button pattern creates great arm movement while staying snug & keeping me warm. It is obvious that the artisans who created this P/C are not only highly skilled, but they also care about their craft. I am so impressed with the quality that I told my wife & kids to decide which Schott jacket is the right one for them, so I can ensure everyone stays warm while looking good when the weather turns again. Schott, thank you & keep up the magnificent work.

    AMAZING COAT!

    Published: Sun, 4/24/2022 by Jason

This is a tank of a coat! Definitely will perform well in cold weather. I’m 6’1” about 195, between a size 41-42 chest size for suits. I read the other reviews about sizing down and I’m glad I did. I purchased the 40 and it fits me really well. And I still have some room for another layer or 2. Totally happy with the purchase!

    I DARE YOU...

    Published: Sun, 4/3/2022 by BrianGoGo

The euphemism, you get what you pay for, may seem cliche, however, I dare you to buy one of the cheaper pea coats you're most likely shopping for and a Schott pea coat and do a side by side comparison. I put my new Schott coat next to my 15 year old inferior coat, and even though my old coat has sailed countless miles and weathered many abuses and been sewn numerous times, my new Schott coat is much better quality in every way, shape and size. The fit is neat perfect, I'm 6'3" with a 33-34 chest and the 42 long fits with just enough room underneath for a couple layers on the really cold PNW marine mornings. For someone with alien long arms, the sleeve and torso length are a breath of "long enough" air in a world of too short sleeves. The material is heavy and stiff, will take some break in. The stitching and interior seem rugged and built to last. The overall fit of the coat is very slimming and formal. You will get complimented on the look of this coat. My Chilean friend said to me, "muy elegante." Do yourself a favor and get what you pay for, buy one of each, and I guarantee which one you'll be sending back.

    PICTURE PERFECT PEACOAT

    Published: Tue, 2/15/2022 by Aaron

I researched for weeks on the most authentic and high quality peacoat on the market. This was it! American made, beautifully cut and fits like a glove based on my chest circumference. Very professional construction. Looking forward to making this a staple of my cold weather wardrobe.

    PERFECT

Published: Sun, 2/13/2022 by Brandon M.

Great coat! Nice and heavy for the cold, still warm even if left unbuttoned. Length is good, happy with the sleeve length as well. Others I’ve worn the sleeves felt too short so when you lift your arms they’d crawl halfway up your forearm, but not with this one. Heavy construction so it has held its shape very well. Feeling like this will be a coat for life.

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
