The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

    EXCELLENT

    Published: Mon, 11/11/2019 by Alan

This was my first peacoat and really my first significant winter since I was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ and now live in Houston. I was making enough trips for work to cold European places and visiting family in Chicago to justify the purchase and it did not disappoint. I'm 5'10" and 165 with an athletic build and the 38 fit me perfectly. It fits well, doesn't look too bulky but leaves plenty of room for layering underneath if necessary with a shirt and heavier cardigan. Definitely keeps you warm and I've experienced it down to 20°F without even a hint of feeling cold. You will not regret buying this as I've had it for 2 years now with no hint of bad construction and it's stayed very well put together without a thread out of place.

    GREAT COAT

Published: Fri, 11/8/2019 by Federico Ramos

The coat is great!! It is thick and big so know your size and choose the next size down. That being said, the coat is well made, the color is great and it is very warm.

RUNS A LITTLE BIG, BUT GREAT CONSTRUCTION!

Absolutely heirloom quality. Size ran big on me and I had to exchange for a smaller size, but other than that, no complaints here!

NO SLIM OPTION EXCEPT FOR MUCH MORE MONEY.

If you're a remotely fit and tall guy the waist will be much too large on you and you'll have to spend 100+ dollars more on the slim version.

I have been wanting this coat for so long and now I have one.
I returned the first one I ordered due to my mistake.
Customer service arranged for the exchange in a very timely manner and I received the correct size a few days later.
This company knows how to do it right.

    WIDE CUT

Published: Sun, 10/13/2019 by coat buying wife

The coat is well-made and seems very warm. The classic style is too wide and bulky for my husband who is a trim 5’-7” guy. He tried the slim cut but that one is so much more expensive.

    EXCELLENT COAT

I had my eye on this coat for several months before buying it. I was not disappointed. I was a little worried about sizing, but the sizing guide on the website was very helpful, and I got the correct size the first time. When it arrived I was very impressed by how thick and warm it was. This coat will serve me well during the cold Utah winters

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
