The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

ORIGINAL, CLASSY, AMERICAN MADE & STYLISH!

    Published: Mon, 3/27/2023 by Daniel

I’m a satisfied owner of two 740 style peacoats. First post was for the black colored peacoat, purchased back in Aug’20.

I recently purchased the Oxford Grey color and could not have asked for anything better! Both peacoats are amazing and fit perfectly. I’m 5’-7”, 195 lbs, built body and w/big shoulders, so size 46 peacoats were purchased. They are stylish and keep me very warm during cold winters.

My first peacoat was purchased back in 1998 & fell in love with it. I was ready to retire that peacoat after 22 yrs., but could not find anything similar to it. I am glad I was able to find Schott NYC back in 2020! One suggestion, I wish Schott NYC would offer a dark brown color peacoat in their 740-style.

    GREAT COAT - THE CLASSIC!

Published: Tue, 3/7/2023 by Lorne Cheeseman

Was looking for a new warm coat and remembered how much I loved the pea coat I had as a teenager. I looked around trying to find the classic pea coat and discovered Scott and the 740. They come in larger sizes which is great since I am big guy. I received the coat and it was quite heavy. The wool is thick and dense. It feels substantial and is very warm. This coat is a winner and I am wearing it a lot now. Highly recommend this coat - it is the real deal.

    FANTASTIC COAT

The coat looks fantastic and is everything I was hoping for. I am 6' and 145 lbs with a runner's body type and the 38 regular fits me perfectly across the chest and length. The sleeves are a tad bit long with them going slightly past the first knuckle joint but it isn't a major issue.

    GOOD COAT, NOT BAD PRICE

Published: Mon, 2/20/2023 by - Northern Maine

I really like the coat. Four stars instead of five because of online size recommendation. 5'11" tall, 190 lbs size 46. The coat was a little too big and the sleeves an inch and a half too long. I decided to keep the coat.

I do not look to see if they have size 45, nor the difference between the two sleeve lengths. You might want to get one size smaller than what is recommended.

I was in the Navy during the 1980s, so I had a real pea coat that lasted about 30 years. It was just a little bit thicker than the one I purchased from Schott. I would have thought a coat like theirs would be more expensive.

The coat arrived in a timely manner and with free shipping.

If someone got a slightly better size to fit, I would definitely recommend buying this coat.

    THE CLASSIC PEACOAT, BEAUTIFULLY STYLED

Published: Mon, 2/20/2023 by Gary G Boothman

this is THE Peacoat to buy. It is made to last forever, and it has all the details that make the Schott Peacoat the ONLY one to buy: anchor buttons, deep chest pockets, superb tailoring and craftsmanship, and a collar that will even keep your ears warm during the Winter storms. Truely a great coat to own for a lifetime. Don't settle for a substitute.

    740 PEA COAT

Published: Mon, 2/13/2023 by Scott Shickman

Really loving this jacket! I was having difficulty deciding to go with the size 38 or size 40. I always think a slim fit looks real nice, but the older I get, the more I want comfort and function. I went with the size 40 and don’t have a doubt in my mind that I made the right decision. It feels great with just a T-shirt and flannel, but could still fit another layer if desired. Not too baggy, not too slim. Very warm and versatile for casual wear. Makes a nice dress coat as well. I’m 5’10” 170lbs and 40”chest.

    BEST COAT I'VE EVER OWNED

Published: Thu, 2/2/2023 by David Nelson

I bought mine 19 years ago and it is still going strong. I expect my heir will be wearing it 50 years from now. Whenever anyone asks my advice on a coat I tell them to buy a Schott peacoat.

    SIZING WAY OFF

Published: Tue, 1/31/2023 by Mike F

Beautiful crafted jacket, but sizing way off. I have 3 Schott jackets in size 48, site recommended a 48 but I ordered a 46 which was way too big. Return was very easy, kudos. I stopped in a store near me which had them in stock and was able to try on different sizes and ended up with a size 42 ! for less money.

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
