The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

    THEDOORDR

Published: Sun, 11/24/2019 by Harris W Hall Jr

I had a Schott pea coat back when was in high school that I bought at an army/navy surplus store. It was warm and tough as nails. My waistline outgrew it as the years passed. I have been wanting another one but in a more neutral color than dark navy. I saw the Schott in gray and new I had to have it. The coat is exactly as I expected. Love that it’s made is USA. Service was fast and flawless.

    MORE OF AN OVERCOAT

Published: Fri, 11/22/2019 by Mark Jenkins

I’m 5’8” 178lbs, and normally wear a 42R. I ordered size 40 in the 740 classic peacoat. It was way too big. I really liked the quality Of the coat and the quilted lining but I had to return it. Customer service said this one is designed to wear as an overcoat over a suit. tried a medium in the 751 peacoat. Still very good quality, but I didn’t like the lining as much and I really wanted the heavier wool for Michigan winters. It fit a little too snug to wear with more than a T-shirt, but I like that there was no rear vent. I ended up exchanging this one for a size 42 in the 740C slim-fit leather trim peacoat. I was worried about the leather trim, but it is very subtle. This was the best fit of all but I may have it altered as i prefer it to be a little tighter even with a sweater underneath. The length is supposed to be the same as the 751, but it looks longer to me. All are very nice American-made peacoats, way better than anything I tried at department stores, it’s just a matter of finding the right fit.

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
