The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

    EXCELLENT COAT

    Very pleased with my purchase!
The quality and weight of this coat is impressive. The pictures do not do the coat justice.

I’m 5’10” 175 and wear a size 40 blazer, I took the recommendations of many and sized down to a 38 and fits perfect, the extra length provides a little more coverage and achieves the desired look I was looking for.

    ABSOLUTE TANK OF A COAT

I was deciding between this and another far more expensive US made peacoat. Glad i went with this one!

The construction is superb and the lining provides a level of sophistication. At the same time it isn't excessively formal only to be worn with suits and be packed away most other times. I plan to take this out on snow.

Be warned it runs large. I am athletic build (6ft, 205lb) with broader shoulders/arms and am usually a 42 in suits. I ordered the 42 and it was a tent. I returned for the 40 which fits me perfectly.

    GREAT PEA COAT!

Published: Tue, 6/18/2024 by Dave Bee

I just received my new pea coat and love it. I ordered a 44 and knew that the sleeves would be too long so sent it back to Schott to have them shortened -- costs a little, but worth it to have the jacket fit the way I like (I like things a little relaxed). I'm 5'8" and 180 lbs for reference. I wanted to replace my US Navy pea coat and this was the closest I could come -- although it has an extra set of buttons (two rows of four instead of two rows of three). Everything else is like my old jacket from 1981 that just doesn't fit anymore...Nice thick wool and pockets are great. The buttons seem to be sewn on well. Returning for shortening the sleeves was easy and pretty quick turn-a-round (it's 90+ degrees so no hurry).

The coat is very high quality and well insulated .craftsmanship is excellent. I used the size quite to get a perfect fit. My only qualm was the new navy color looks just like dark navy. I still would highly recommend this product and I never write reviews.

High quality feel. Unless you are a husky guy size down one. Arm seem a tall long on me as size 40, at 5’’6”.
This wool feel like so thick and warm I don’t want to take it off.
All black is just different enough and looks classy

    SCHOTT CLASSIC PEA LONG

Published: Sun, 3/10/2024 by Jose Cott

I purchased the schott Classic Pea in a 40 Long it is a fine well-made garment. I am 5,10 200LBS wear a 42 long suit coat, I order a 40 long the jacket fits fine it is a full cut jacket, with good weight made of good materials and solid stitching and comfortable to wear although you may have to break it in a little. I wear it in 40-to-45-degree weather, anything colder than that I would opt for down personally. But it is a fine and smart looking coat, and it feels like it will wear well for years,

    LOVE THIS COAT

Published: Fri, 1/19/2024 by William H

I have always wanted a good pea coat so I'm glad I waited to buy this one. I live in northern Michigan . I wanted a coat that was warm but looked nice for those times when I did not want to wear a parka. I bought the black pea coat and it looks sharp. The inside has a nice smooth lining. There are pockets inside and out on both sides. I am 6 ft 2 in and weigh about 185 lb. My shirt sleeve length is about 34 in. I purchased the black 42 in chest pea coat. It fits very well and still has room to wear a shirt and sweater underneath. Sleeve length is great and goes a little past my wrist. It weighs about 4 lb 13 oz which is the same weight as my E.B. winter parka.. am extremely happy with this purchase.

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
