The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

Black 10 Button Peacoat. "I just read books."
I bought a lot of jackets from the Schott Delancey Store in lower Manhattan when I was living in NY. Ordered online and got here in a few days. Very thick material for the NYC cold weather, and not that thin fashionable stuff everyone is pushing out now. Robert Redford went to Pratt and so did I. The venerable .45 just fits in the pocket,. I'm 5'-11" 180lbs ordered Size 38 fits perfectly.. Jeans, blue shirt, white sweater, scarf, and an Gatsby tweed flat hat. Ready to do battle with assassins. Timeless.

I had been in the market for a pea coat for quite some time but I had yet to find one that caught me eye (fit, cut, etc.). I bought the 740 classic and am I so glad I did. This pea cost is incredible. It’s extremely well made (USA) and it’s incredibly warm. With regard to the size, Scott’s size chart determination is spot on. Schott recommend I go for a size 36 and that’s what I got. It fits perfectly (it hugs your body for a perfect cut look with room enough for a light sweater). I am 5’11” and weigh 150 with a runners body. Gentlemen, do yourself a favor and look no further if you’re in the market for a professional grade pea coat. You will not be disappointed. Cheers.

This is by far the best made & nicest coat I've ever purchased. There's plenty of room if I layer under it, yet it fits well enough to keep out any breezes - with the right scarf. Beautifully crafated coat and I'm really happy with this purchase.

I’ve been casually shopping for a pea coat for a few years now. Found the Schott pea coat while reading reviews about pea coats, dove in and couldn’t find a damn thing wrong with these coats. I pulled the trigger and couldn’t be more happy once I unpackaged it, and even more so when I tried it on. Great quality!!

I’m 5’10” weigh about 180lbs, evenly proportioned and went with the medium. Perfect! My arms are a little longer, this jacket covered them.

    Hope this helps future buyers.

All reviews state follow sizing on site. Would have been 46 but went down to 44 yet still too big. Now closed so reviews not accurate so don't get replacement in couple days but maybe 2 weeks. Disappointing.

This is exactly the peacoat I had been looking for. The real deal. Heavy, rugged, classy.

Customer service was excellent as I had an issue they helped resolve. My fault, but Schott flexible.

    Worth the money.

This Pea coat is beyond my expectations. Its quality is amazing. I picked the classic navy blue and I’m glad I did. I’m keeping it in a different wardrobe than my other coats at home. The measurement tool recommended 42, I took 40. All perfect! Yes, make sure to take one size down!

Purchased as a gift for the s/o. Usually have issues finding apparel that works for their frame (on the thin side). Fit great, crazy fast shipping, and keeps them from shivering in the cold even in freezing temps. Nicely done! :)

This thing is ultra-warm, as it's incredibly thick and even seems to have added insulation, but even when choosing the "extra slim" fit guide recommendation, I looked like a child wearing his father's coat. The chest was okay, but the waist, shoulders, and sleeves were absolutely massive. It was obvious the chest would be uncomfortable if I went a size down, so I exchanged it for the 751 in small (which had the opposite issue). Also, the arm holes are weird - they're stitched really low at a steep angle, so they make it very hard to raise your arm above shoulder height. Overall, it's just an awful fit for smaller athletic builds. If I was a bigger dude, I'm sure it would've been fine.

    30" waist
    39" chest
    ordered size: 36

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
