The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

    IT’S A CLASSIC FOR A REASON !

    Published: Mon, 2/3/2025 by DanP

Having grown tired of the puffer jackets I started searching for a high quality affordable classic wool coat. I live in metro NYC area and had a chance to try on a bunch of different wool coats at the large department stores in the area. Found many nice coats but they were very expensive and too dressy for my needs.
I tried on the Schott at the great Daves Army & Navy on 6th Avenue in NYC and realized that this was the right choice for me.
Classic styling and beautifully crafted at a very reasonable price point when compared to other jackets in this category. It’s good for casual wear or if I need to get dressed up.
I ordered a 46 and needed to have the sleeves tailored but the coat is now a perfect fit.
I can wear my flannels with a sweater if needed, sweatshirts and base layers with room to move.
This coat is heavier in weight than a puffer but it’s totally manageable.
Nice and warm, looks great and I expect it to last me for many years since it seems to be indestructible.
I purchased directly from Schott Brothers and it was quickly shipped and professionally packed.
    Highly recommend this coat.
    Thanks !

    EXCELLENT COAT

Published: Sat, 2/1/2025 by Steven B

After searching for months and even purchasing an original Navy peacoat online and returning it, I ordered this legit beast. Most reviews say to order a size down and I did that as well. I still have plenty of room to layer (t-shirt, button up and thick sweater). This is not a tailored fashion jacket. This is a fairly heavy winter coat. With the right amount of layering you could wear this below 20 degrees and up to 40 degrees. I am 5’9 182lbs with an athletic build. I usually wear a large or a 42 blazer. I ordered this jacket in a 40. I may even be able to fit in a 38 but I think the shoulders would be too tight for me. It doesn’t get more classic than this jacket. Quality and craftsmanship is excellent and honestly I think this jacket should cost more. Very happy customer and I look forward to using this jacket for the next 20+ years.

BEST COAT I HAVE EVER OWNED

    Published: Tue, 1/28/2025 by James

I've been eyeing this coat for a few years, and finally pulled the trigger. I've owned two other peacoats, so I have something to compare it to.

This is probably the best wool coat of any type I have ever owned. Everything about it just screams quality and elegance.

I love the traditional cut of the coat, which is very close if not identical to the traditional navy peacoats. The navy wool is thick and sturdy but not overly stiff. The buttons are big and sturdy, and the double breasted front is reversible -- you can button either side over the other.

The lapels and collar are nice and big, which is very practical on cold windy days. Another nice touch is the quilted interior lining, which feels so nice.

I'm 6'4" and 230 lbs and I ordered the 44 inch tall version, which is perfect for me. I only had to have a tailor shorten the sleeves an inch or so. Even my tailor complimented the peacoat.

And best of all, the peacoat is Made in USA. You can't go wrong with this coat. If you're on the fence, just get it. I promise you won't regret it.

    SCHOTT NYC PEACOAT

This peacoat is it. The wool is heavy, The insulation is fantastic. The collar is overtop. And all in the name of keeping you warm. I am 6' 1" and about 230 so I ordered the 42" size. Fits great and has a great amount of room for sweaters and scarves. I am very happy that I pulled the trigger on this peacoat. The craftsmanship is excellent. This is a classic piece that will only leave my closet if my son eventually decides to wear it.

    STYLISH COAT, GOOD VALUE

Published: Fri, 1/24/2025 by Mike S

Love it. Coat is very warm and looks great. The collar pops up easily and given the structure of the wool, stays up and keeps your neck protected. Well made and good value versus many similar coats on the market.

    PERFECT

Published: Fri, 1/24/2025 by Steve Hall

I bought this in the Fall. Now that we've had a full week of below freeing temps, I feel I can write a proper review. It's excellent! Warm, without being stifling. You can adjust with open/closed front, or collar up depending on conditions. Great pockets; outside and inside.
It goes with jeans, or as an overcoat with a suit. Either way, I've gotten compliments.
I had to take it to my tailor to get the arms shortened, and after she finished, she said, "This is a very good coat; thick wool, well made." I couldn't agree more.
I normally wear a size 46. That's what I ordered, and what Schott recommended, and it fit perfectly in the shoulders. I'm 5'6", 180 lbs, and it fits lower than the stock photos indicate; not as long as my overcoat, but more like a bridge coat.
When you look at some of the other options out there, I consider it an excellent buy for the price. This is an investment piece that's going to last years and years. I can't recommend it highly enough. I would buy it again in a second.
I really appreciate the craftsmanship of the people who constructed this jacket; it's a genuine luxury in today's times.

    GREAT PEA COAT

Published: Sun, 1/19/2025 by Arnie G

The coat itself is impressively lightweight while still providing excellent warmth, making it an ideal choice for transitional weather or travel. It offers enough insulation to remain practical as a winter coat when paired with the right layers, which is a big plus for its versatility.

As for versatility, this coat is a true chameleon in my wardrobe. It pairs effortlessly with casual jeans for a laid-back look and dresses up nicely for more formal outfits. Its ability to transition between styles made it a reliable go-to option for a variety of occasions. A cool feature is the buttons have the added correct look of the anchor with the rope wrapped around.

Anyone looking for a stylish, functional, and travel-friendly coat, this is one worth considering.

    FIRST IMPRESSIONS GOOD

    Published: Fri, 1/17/2025 by Caimi

I have owned lesser peacoats. Thinner for sure. This one seems to be made to be a lifer. Well-constructed and sturdy. Heavy as hell but, as another reviewer said first, it doesn't look bulky when worn. It is warm on a cold ay. Just as it is supposed to be. And it looks good, smart. I got the new navy which looks black if you don't look too closely. That's okay. I wish Schott still did green but this is more traditional. I can't think of anything wrong with it so I'll give it five stars.

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
