The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

EEXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR THE PAST 22 YEARS!

Published: Sun, 8/23/2020 by Daniel Gonzalez

My first navy peacoat brand was SPIEWAK Flight Deck USA which I fell in love with. It was purchased back in 1998. Yes, I still own it. I was now due for a new one, but unfortunately, the exact brand was no longer available as it was discontinued and the store that it was purchased was no longer in business. Fortunately, I found SCHOTTNYC and after emailing their customer service a picture of above brand that I was searching for, their associate was able to validate that I was at the right place to buy a new one. I am incredibly pleased and definitely love my new SCHOTTNYC peacoat size 46 regular black color! This brand is equivalent to my first purchased peacoat. The fit, texture, appearance and cosmetics are very appealing. I highly recommend this peacoat! It’s very fashionable! I can’t wait to sport it this winter.

NOW THIS IS ONE BEAUTIFUL COAT

This is probably the nicest coat I have ever purchased . The fit and quality are outstanding as is the service. Use the fit finder and go with what it suggests they know their product. I always used to window shop their store in NYC.

    PERFECT

    Published: Thu, 7/9/2020 by Roberta

My husband is 6 ft 190 pounds... fairly fit.
He wears a 42 long sports jacket and 16.5 neck , 35 inch sleeve shirt ... he needs the longer sleeve. So we ordered a peacoat in 42 long. The fit is perfect. Dense warm fabric. The navy colour is a dark, nearly black navy which looks great. There was a flaw in the first shipped coat so Schott exchanged it right away at no extra cost. The coat looks amazing on him and he loves it. Great coat and service. Very happy. Don't hesitate to get one.

    EXCELLENT FIT, VERSATILITY, AND VALUE

    Published: Fri, 5/8/2020 by C

I'm 5'9" and 165 lbs - my chest measures 38", and the size 36 fits my shoulders perfectly. The sleeves are a little long, but that's easy to hem. The Regular length is longer than I expected: it fully covers my suit jackets well past my belt line, but that just means I can wear it with suits! The Navy color really is as dark as everyone says, but this makes it easy to wear with black and gray in addition to your more typical earth tone colors.

With the top three buttons fastened (and the bottom unbuttoned for a slight flare), the coat has a high collar: this nicely frames a necktie knot and allows for even a short scarf to fully fill the collar with a Parisian knot. A crew neck undershirt is a classic look as shown in the product pictures, and I look forward to experimenting with turtleneck sweaters too.

Overall, this is a versatile and well-constructed coat. It's well worth the money, but I'd recommend subscribing to the newsletter: at one point they sent out a discount code that wasn't advertised on the website, which made it an even better deal if you're willing to wait.

    EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED

    Published: Fri, 5/1/2020 by FLHS

Need a heavy winter coat for overall needs. Classic design and awesomely constructed. I ordered size 54 which was way to big. I ordered a size 52 and that fit really well. No hassle at all sending back the size 54.

    Note I am 5'10" @ 180lbs.

A PEA COAT FOR THE AGES (WELL, AT LEAST THREE GENERATIONS)

Published: Fri, 5/1/2020 by Thomas Jemielity

Schott's U.S. Navy Pea Coat is one of the finest cold-weather items made. The coat is warm, its wider collar when throw up smothers your head in comfortable warmth, and, who knows, if you're like me (no Tom Cruise look-a-like), you'll be stopped by people complimenting you on your coat. I've got two, bought each of my sons one, and just presented my sixteen-year-old grandson with his first U.S. Navy Pea Coat. That makes it a three-generations item in our family.
That's a lot of reliable, enjoyable warmth!

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
