The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY, BUT BE SURE TO USE THE SIZE GUIDE!

    Published: Tue, 11/29/2022 by Nathan

I noticed a review that encouraged buyers to trust the size calculator provided by Schott, and I can back that up with my own purchase. They recommended a coat two sizes smaller than my normal suit size but I was surprised to find that it fit perfectly. Potential buyers should consider using the guide!

    EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY

Published: Fri, 11/11/2022 by Dominick Andrews

I searched many websites for an authentic pea coat to purchase. Researched sizes, materials, and authenticity. This eventually led me to the Schott Company. My first purchase of the coat was too small and Schott made it a very easy process to return. Schott immediately sent me the next size up, size 40. I hated to return the coat because the quality was exceptional. Received the new pea coat in a matter of days and I couldn’t be more pleased with my decision to buy it from Schott. Again, it’s quality is superb and you won’t be disappointed. Thank you Schott.

    HUGE SCHOTT FAN

I have 5 Schott leather jackets 4 Schott cardigans and this pea coat. Everything that Schott manufactures is top notch. If you’re on the fence just buy it! Regarding fit: I’m 6’ 185# and L fits loose enough to layer underneath. If you want to wear it over a t shirt I would size down.

Easily the best quality pea coat I’ve ever had. Highly recommended and will likely own another style/color from Schott in the future.

LET’S TALK ABOUT SIZING-USE THEIR GUIDE!

Published: Wed, 11/2/2022 by Joseph in Chicago

I encourage everyone to use the feature that SchottNYC provides for sizing right here on the product page. Don’t just order your suit size. I wear a 38R suit, but for this purchase I used a tape measure (well I couldn’t find my fabric tape measure so I used my phone cord and matched it up to a standard tape measure) and I was at 37”. Along with my height, weight, and preference for a slim fit, the website suggested a 34. I was skeptical. VERY skeptical. I thought maybe I should get a 36. I didn’t. I got the 34 they suggested. And it’s PERFECT. (I think it’s great that their size guide allows you to provide the type of fit you prefer, I believe there are five choices for fit).

I really just wanted to share fit review, but for other elements: The jacket is great quality but you all probably know that already. The navy (as opposed to the new navy) is exactly what I think of as a classic pea coat color. That deep rich almost black but definitely not black shade of pea coat navy. The wool is that somewhat stiff (in a good way) kind of wool, not the unstructured too soft versions you’ll find at random retailers. Came ready to wear right out of the sturdy box, on a hanger. One simple fold. No creases to be pressed out etc.

    EXCELLENT PEACOAT

Published: Sat, 10/29/2022 by C Colby

Easily the nicest peacoat I’ve ever purchased. I initially ordered a 44 which was a little too big but the exchange process was very easy and fast. Couldn’t recommend this coat enough.

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
