The US Navy Peacoat was adopted during the early 20th Century, from Britain’s Royal Navy Reefer Jacket. The Royal Navy's first regulations for uniforms for other ranks were issued in 1857, a century after the regulations for officers and this garment was originally used by Midshipmen (Reefers). These crewmen had to climb the rigging and furl and unfurl, or ‘reef’, the sails of the sailing ships of the era. The jacket was short, to allow ease of movement through the rigging. It had a double-breasted front, which displaced the buttons to each side. This helped reduce the chance of them getting caught on ropes, as the wearer maneuvered the sails. The pockets were often close to vertical, and over the flanks, rather than horizontal and at wrist level. It was made of very heavy wool, in dark Navy blue, with a nap on the face side.

The success of the style is proved by its singularly universal appearance throughout the Navies of Europe. This may account for the US Navy's nomenclature as an Anglicization of the Dutch 'Pijekkat', being a jacket made of 'Pij' (coarse wool) cloth. Conversely, it may be from the shortening of the Belgium Navies term ‘Pilot’s Jacket’ to P. Jacket, then being misspelled/adapted to Pea Coat. The term ‘Pea Jacket’ is reputed to first appear in the Oxford English Dictionary between 1717 and 1723. ‘Pea Coat’ does not appear for another century.

    TIGHT SHOULDERS

    Published: Sat, 11/2/2024 by Rob

I wanted to love this jacket. Been looking at it online (and on Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor) for years.

I'm 5' 10" and about 185. Average to athletic build.

The good: Great-looking, well made, and has thick wool. Sleeves and overall length are perfect. Good around the middle (not tight, not baggy).

The not-so-good: Shoulders are cut like a suitcoat. Way too tight. Uncomfortable and restricts movement, even with a t-shirt.

I own Filson and Woolrich jackets that fit much better and have shoulders that are roomy enough for a sweater but are not loose or baggy at all. Wish the Schott fit the same.

AN EXCELLENT COAT -- INITIAL IMPRESSION

    Published: Sat, 11/2/2024 by Max

I have just received this coat so I cannot address long term durability or use. It seems to be a very well made coat -- thick wool -- seems it will be warm. Fits true to size and looks great. I am very pleased with the customer service. I had gotten a smaller size but decided that I wanted to go a size larger. The return process was easy (though you do have to pack it up and take it to UPS). As soon as they received the old coat the sent me a new one. Overall, I highly recommend.

    GREAT BUT REALLY DARK

Published: Sun, 10/27/2024 by Barry Dunn

The coat seems to be of very high quality. This is a heavy coat for cold weather not some thin look alike. I would give it 5 stars, but the "New Navy" color is very, very dark. It almost looks black even in direct sunlight. If placed next to a black or charcoal piece of clothing, you can tell that it is in fact blue. I had hoped the "New Navy" would be a little more obviously blue than the "Navy". However, this is a great coat. My original order was for a 40R which I normally wear but it was way too big for me. I'm 5'11" 180 lb. Schott did a return and exchange to the 38R and it fits great.

    EXCELLENT COAT

    Very pleased with my purchase!
The quality and weight of this coat is impressive. The pictures do not do the coat justice.

I’m 5’10” 175 and wear a size 40 blazer, I took the recommendations of many and sized down to a 38 and fits perfect, the extra length provides a little more coverage and achieves the desired look I was looking for.

    IN LOVE

    Published: Tue, 10/1/2024 by RG

I absolutely love this coat. My biggest apprehension was whether or not I was ordering the right size. There seemed to be a lot of range in the reviews here and I waffled back and forth for about a week before pulling the trigger. In the hope that it helps the next person, I'm 5'7" about 170 lbs and I ordered a 40 that fits perfectly. It hangs well with just a shirt, and across my shoulders, but is still roomy enough that I could add a sweater layer if weather dictated. I can't wait for it to get cold enough to wear daily!

DIFFICULT TO SIZE BUT WORTH THE EFFORT!

    Published: Mon, 9/30/2024 by cs

Love the 740 peacoat. I'm 5'10" 185lbs. Tailored shirt size is about 44" chest and 34.25" sleeves. Size 34 waist in pants. Depending on the brand, I might wear a 42 or 44 suit. Coats run 52 or 54 in euro sizes. I don't intend to wear this over a suit jacket. I have a couple of overcoats for that. Instead, I wanted a slim fit for the peacoat. The Schott size guide originally told me to order a 42. That was a tent on me. Exchanged it for a size 40. That fit better in the chest and shoulders but there was still too much room in the stomach. I decided to try a 38 but also went with the L (long) version. I'm not over 6' tall. However, I was concerned about sleeve length. I also saw a youtube video that recommended sizing down but going with an L. Received the peacoat today and the 38L fits great. Plenty of room for movement with only a shirt on. No problem with a fleece underneath as well. Sleeves land at just above my knuckles. Again, awesome looking coat. Can't wait for the weather to turn just a bit colder so I can wear it!

I love this coat. By far the best I have ever owned. Quality and workmanship second to none.
Love the tradition and love the colour.
Comfortable yet style that is notable.
Sizes are generous so don’t go up in size. I did to be on the safe side and had to do the costly exercise of international return post.
I didn’t question the task knowing the right size I would be very happy with for a long time to come.

    ABSOLUTE TANK OF A COAT

I was deciding between this and another far more expensive US made peacoat. Glad i went with this one!

The construction is superb and the lining provides a level of sophistication. At the same time it isn't excessively formal only to be worn with suits and be packed away most other times. I plan to take this out on snow.

Be warned it runs large. I am athletic build (6ft, 205lb) with broader shoulders/arms and am usually a 42 in suits. I ordered the 42 and it was a tent. I returned for the 40 which fits me perfectly.

    GREAT PEA COAT!

Published: Tue, 6/18/2024 by Dave Bee

I just received my new pea coat and love it. I ordered a 44 and knew that the sleeves would be too long so sent it back to Schott to have them shortened -- costs a little, but worth it to have the jacket fit the way I like (I like things a little relaxed). I'm 5'8" and 180 lbs for reference. I wanted to replace my US Navy pea coat and this was the closest I could come -- although it has an extra set of buttons (two rows of four instead of two rows of three). Everything else is like my old jacket from 1981 that just doesn't fit anymore...Nice thick wool and pockets are great. The buttons seem to be sewn on well. Returning for shortening the sleeves was easy and pretty quick turn-a-round (it's 90+ degrees so no hurry).

    CLASSIC PEA COAT

The coat is very high quality and well insulated .craftsmanship is excellent. I used the size quite to get a perfect fit. My only qualm was the new navy color looks just like dark navy. I still would highly recommend this product and I never write reviews.

    1. How dark is the Navy color?

The Navy on the 740 is a traditional dark navy color that is almost black. You would notice blue hint when comparing to actual black. The "New Navy" color offered is more of a milder dark blue.

    2. Should I get a long size?

We recommend people to go for the long size if they are over 6'2", or have long arms/torsos.
