The 3 stars is for the look.
It is a great looking coat.
However. . .
Having tried it on, it does not look like Navy Blue at all, even while wearing under direct spotlights. It consistently appears Black to the eye.
The underarms are much too tight and high to the point of uncomfortable. You could not wear more that a dress shirts' thickness underneath.
The arms are cut like slim fit while the body is loose fit (not regular fit.)
Lastly, there is too much flare as the coat goes from waist to hem bottom.
It IS a good 'looking' coat but the fit is all over the place.
(the sales staff was fantastic by the way, very nice people)
The coat was very well made and fit me nicely: 5 stars. My 3 star rating pertains only to the issue of it being too bulky and stiff for me. That is probably the nature of a
peacoat.
Your customer service and ease of returns is the best I have ever experienced. Everyone I dealt with was very nice and knowledgeable. I rate your personnel: 10stars. You even mailed me a return label because my printer was broken. You kept me informed about everything and processed the return and credit with surprising speed and efficiency. Amazing! I will be contacting Schott later for the purchase of one of your leather coats/jackets. Keep up the great work!!
I debated between this and the 751 Slim Fit Peacoat. It's a small detail but I'm partial to the higher placement of the warmer pockets on the 782USA, mid-torso just below the chest. That detail along with the lower flap pockets give it a little more visual interest, I received a couple compliments from people I didn't know the first few times I wore it out. The heavier weight wool compared to the 751 also make this more of a winter coat, probably too warm for temps near 50 and above.
At 5' 11", 190 with a 41" chest and athletic build I seemed to be on the border between sizes. The fit guide suggested L with the fit preference set to standard but M with a slim fit preference. Now that I've worn it I can say that a M would have for sure been too tight in the shoulders. The L is just right, without feeling loose my movement isn't restricted in any way. The fit is more generous in the torso but it does not feel baggy or bulky and allows for free movement and layering in really cold temps.
I ordered the Melton Wool Peacoat (782 USA, Navy) from schottnyc.com a couple of weeks ago. Shipping to Europe was fairly expensive but the FedEx shipment and customs process was very fast (I received the coat in two days after pressing the order button!), Schott customer service was excellent (my questions regarding the size and customs fees were answered promptly and clearly).
Despite the increased price caused by shipping and customs duties I do not regret the purchase at all: Simply an excellent, very sturdy and well-fitting coat. I am 183 cm/96 kg and size L was good.
While this does still come with the 740N tag in the collar, the sales tag does say it is the 782US. This coat exudes quality. The corduroy pockets are great and the outside flap pockets are huge! I have worn this only 3 times now, and have received multiple compliments each time.
One minor point is that this is an 80/20 wool blend, and not 100% Melton wool as I expected from the item description. I feel this is misleading on Schott's part. The overall quality cannot be denied, however.
I bought this coat specifically because it has a different liner than the 740N. as well as the additional pockets. I live in the Pacific northwest, so I don't need the quilted lining, and it would definitely be too warm for the winters that we have here. That said, I was able to stand out in 38 degree wind and rain with only a light button down underneath and was perfectly comfortable. There is plenty of room for layers when colder weather arrives.
Sizing is a little off based on the fit guide. I am 5'7 195lbs, with a 48 inch chest. I initially ordered the XXL, and when it arrived, I felt like a kid playing in an adult's coat. Fortunately the exchange process was very easy. When the XL arrived it fit perfectly. A couple of people said it looked like it was tailored, and it sure felt that way.
With the minor issue of the 80/20 wool blend, I would still give this coat a 4.5. I feel this will last a lifetime. Is it worth the extra $165? For me, yes. The lighter liner, extra pockets and quality buttons are what I want. For most people, I don't know. I am happy I got it on a Black Friday sale so it made the decision easier.
I'd give this a full 5 star, as the build of this coat is incredible and absolutely worth the cost. However, even after giving my measurements and confirming with one of Schott's experts that I'm a size large, it's a little too big even with layers underneath. Unfortunately, I'm in Canada so shipping back and exchanging is much too costly at this point. I might attempt getting it tailored but I really wish I got one size down.
This coat upgrades the standard issue peacoat with additional flap pockets in the sides and a flap to secure the raised collar against winds. The fabric is dense, thick, warm and high quality. Inside, there is a chest pocket for cell phone or wallet. It replaces my old Gloverall pea coat that frankly is not as warm and uses quick-to-pill fabric with a looser weave..
I really like Schott as a company, and the products it offers, but this peacoat came up short for me and what I was expecting.
First, the coat fit nicely, and when I put it on, it looks like it was custom tailored for me. I ordered a large, based on my chest measurement of 42 inches. This jacket is a little tight in the shoulder region, and when I bend over at the waist, I sometimes hear "popping" sounds from the shoulder seams, which I take as sewed seams stretching. I'm worried about seams tearing there. I'm no Adonis by any means, but I think manufacturing this jacket in the generic "size" category is a step down from making them by chest size, like Schott does with the 740 Classic.
Second, IT'S NOT WARM! Far from it. I live in Minnesota, and we know cold. I had this jacket on the past few days and nights to see if it lived up to the well deserved peacoat reputation as a cold weather garment, and the 782 doesn't come through. I think the problem is the lining. On the 782 you have a simple polyester lining. It's not quilted, like on the 740. I can really feel the cold, especially around the shoulders and the arms. You definitely will need to layer something underneath this coat in order to retain some heat.
Third, cost. At the time of this review, the 782 is $180 more than the 740. The difference between the two is you get 2 lined handwarmer pockets at mid chest, 2 vertical flapped pockets (they're large!) on the lower outsides, one interior pocket on the right chest, and a small collar/throat latch that can be buttoned across the neck. These are nice additions, and the construction is excellent, but the added cost, in my opinion, is not justified. I own both (the 740 and the 782), and in my opinion the 782 is a big step down as a representative of the peacoat style. At best, the 782 would be a fall coat; it doesn't deliver as a winter garment. If you need to make a choice, get the 740 Classic.
I have a 740N version as well. I prefer the diamond quilted liner in the 740N over the standard issue lining in this jacket. Just my preference. I purchased this simply due to the flap pockets and extra length/buttons. It makes the peacoat look more formal/dressy. Good for going in and out of department stores in NYC vs the more casual look of the shorter 740N.
I do have one fairly reasonable complaint. The weight of the material left me " wanting ". The wool doesn't feel as heavy as it should be. It's nice but if you have ever handled a vintage wool issue peacoat this isn't it as far as wool quality goes.
The craftsmanship is amazing, the fit is perfect (I am 6'2 165 lbs and the medium is right on) and the color is gorgeous. High quality materials used here and the coat is quite hefty in the best way. Lots of compliments when I wore it out the other night for the first time. Collar stands up nicely for when you want that extra protection. HIGHLY recommend.
