It has been almost by chance I took the 582, since I was looking for a jacket the simplest possible, without zip closer in the downside pockets. The bomber style I have chosen wasn't available yet for my size and this trucker jacket seemed to me to fit as well.
So: I think if one is looking for a jacket keeping a shield when windy even in summer days (maybe not properly at 12 am on a beach under the sun), where one's hands can feel warm, the 582 is a very good choice.
In both upper and down pockets there's room for your stuff: in the upper for sunglasses (not too big), a pen, a card, maybe a little block notes if one doesn't care leaving the zip open; just smartphone and keys in the down ones, one has something else to bring better to find room in the pockets of the pants or of the shirt.
The size instrument on Schott NYC is precise, the images with the young boys on the internet site not less than realistic. The fit depends always on what one is looking for. Even my body is quite bigger than the boys' in the photos standard fit resulted perfect, and the best is still to come, since after one wear this jacket for the first time, the more it is worn, the more it felt softer and comfortable, impressing in itself the shape of its owners' body.
Leather is stunning on each point of view, from the shield it provide, to its strength and to the way its color looks; the fact the jacket is classified among the lightweight ones is to be considered together with the strength of the leather it is made of, be sure it will be last.
The first thing to say, although it is repeated so often that it may seem a cliché, is that a jacket like this is a work of high level craftsmanship.
From an aesthetic point of view, perhaps it is a matter of taste: in the Schott catalogue the 582 is among the most essential ones, in terms of shape and with respect to the way in which the leather it is made of has been cut.
What matters a lot, however, is utility, because a garment like this should be worn because it is useful, rather than for fashion: I believe that in any circumstance - even in the height of summer - in which there is wind and parts of the body such as the head, neck, elbows and arms are exposed, this vest is an effective shield.
The fact that it is almost completely unlined except in the sleeves and on the shoulders and its weight - which is not light in the common sense of the term, but compared to what light is meant for leather garments - makes it suitable for intermediate seasons , including those summer days when, whether you are on a motorcycle, piloting a boat or driving a car with the windows completely open, you need something that provides more shelter than a fabric like cotton and doesn't make you sweat instantly like nylon .
The buttons on the cuffs allow you to decide whether to let air pass inside the sleeves or not: something that would not be possible in the case of a bomber jacket, with the cuffs and waist made of knit, which also has other advantages.
What else: perhaps the zipped pocket should be enlarged, even if only slightly (the A6 format of a small notepad and additional room for a pen), in any case it is large enough to contain a pair of sunglasses, if they are not the huge ones you sometimes see around; the front pockets are supposed to keep your hands warm, but they contain some small objects (keys, smartphone) without worrying about them slipping away: this is the case in which the front pockets like those of the bomber jacket make you realize what they are needed. On the other hand, it also depends on what else you have on: all you need is a shirt with a breast pocket, some chinos with large pockets and you have less need to fill your jacket with stuff.
As for the leather with which it is sewn, the impression is really strong in terms of the singularity of the color and the effect it has when touching it.
Regarding the size, the tool for help in choosing the right size contained on the Schott NYC website is precise, as long as you know how you want the jacket to fit; As soon as it comes out of the box it may seem stiff but just keep it on for a short time, for example while driving, and that feeling of stiffness will go away and the comfort will remain.
This jacket fits like a glove. Perfect to wear with a T-Shirt or possibly a thin hoodie. I ordered the Small and I'm 5' 8" 157 pounds athletic build. The cuffs are a little small and require unbutton to remove or I have to squeeze to get the jacket off. I'm sure after time they will stretch to a good size. While wearing the jacket the cuffs are a good fit. The leather is very soft with an oil finish and forms to your body right away. No inside pocket which is the only negative. Instant attention getter!
Just received this in the mail and I’m beyond excited. I’ve been trying to find a simple leather jacket that’s lightweight and has a collar. I’ve been searching a long long time taking chances on eBay and buying used ones that ALMOST fit the bill but they were never quite IT. This feels absolutely perfect. I’m 6’1 & 183 lbs and prefer a slimmer fitting jacket and the medium (my normal size & Schott’s recommended size) fit absolutely perfect. I couldn’t be happier. If you’re on the fence, buy it. $1000 dollars is absolutely not cheap (give or take after taxes) but it feels like an investment and jacket I’ll pass down to my son someday. He’s only five months old so I’ll have plenty of time to break it in!
Another amazing leather jacket in my collection. My 5th Schott.
I really like these unlined jackets. Slim, flattering and yet comfortable.
My 575 is absolutely one of my favourite pieces. This new 582 fits very similar to the 575. So, if you have one of those then you will know what size to order !!
I’m 5”9 190lbs and the size large fits perfectly. Not a cheap price but when you count the length of time this will last and the number of times you will throw this across your back, it’s amazing value.
A simple design but a timeless one too.
Well done Schott. Another great piece of leather workmanship.
I've had a number of the Schott leather jackets - all made with such quality - however, I've found that over time I get more daily use out of a lighter jacket (vs. a beefy Moto). This jacket is perfect - typical Schott quality construction and fit. I'm 6'1 / 180lbs and the large fit me perfectly. Love that the sleeves are lined - slides on easily. Also, I really like the simplicity - nothing ornamental - just classic style. Highly recommend.
A great jacket that complements my 141 (and a classic canvas trucker).. The look and smell of the leather oozes its very high quality look and construction. It's a leather jacket style that is not very common (like a Perfecto) so it does get the looks. Ordered it blind and the Medium is perfect for my build. It being unlined is ideal for the So Cal climate. I'm one satisfied customer...
I had been looking for a leather jacket that I could wear to work, out on the town, and would be comfortable while driving. I also did not want the "suit of armor" which my previous jacket was.
I'm 56 yrs old., 5'9" and 170 lbs., semi-athletic build.
The size Large fits me perfectly.
The leather has a nice waxy, substantial, high-quality feel to it - and is pretty much broken in from day 1.
My previous leather jacket was way too heavy for me (8+ lbs). I'm so happy I came across the Schott website. Customer service answered my questions very well, which helped me make my selection.
Not an inexpensive jacket by any means, but I feel it's worth every penny, as I'll have this to pass down to my son.
Even though it says "unlined" in the product title, it does have lining in the sleeves, which helps with a very easy on/off wearability.
I live in New England and wanted a jacket for spring and very early fall. This fits the bill!
So nice. I have a 626 large and have been wanting a style like 582. 6ft 215 lbs, 44in chest 36in waist. I was in between L and XL according to Schott size guide. I went with XL and its standard fit with some room to move. Leather is very nice, sleeves are lined and I have no issues with the remaining jacket being unlined, no snagging or awkwardness. This was my first "unlined" leather. Speedy shipping, I will be a lifelong customer,
Just got my 582 jacket today. Great look all around, no complaints. As for sizing… I’m 5’9” and 215 lbs. The 2XL was def the right size. I considered the XL according to the size guide with my chest measurements but after trying on the 2XL the XL def would not have fit.
