Cowhide Casual Racer Leather Jacket

STYLE: 654

(62)
Schott NYC’s slim-fitting Leather Café Racer Motorcycle Jacket gives a tip of the hat to 1950s iconic jackets worn by English soldiers back from WWII. These speed-happy daredevils began “souping up” older, prewar motorbikes and racing them at top speed between local pubs and cafés. One can only imagine the wagers bet and lost during those late-night races on twisted, narrow roads. Out of this restlessness rose the need for a jacket that was durable and streamlined, and decades later that call has been answered. Schott remodeled the classic motorcycle jacket with a minimalist contour in mind, adding a mandarin-style upright collar and designing the arms to fit tightly from shoulder to zippered cuffs. The result is a no-frills, refined look that you can take to the open road for a warm weather ride, out for a night on the town, or both.

    Leather Type, Fit and Construction:

Rooted in tradition, the Schott Model 654 continues this cafe racer style from the 50's. Based on early racer designs the 654 has changed a bit but the overall concept remains the same. Design a tight fitting, no frills mens leather jacket with a cool, refined look. We feel our Café Racer has accomplished this and make a profound statement. Schott continues production of the classic Café Racer motorcycle jacket style, as always, right here in the U.S.A.

Our customers asked for us to give them a lighter weight café racer style leather biker jacket and we feel that model 654 answers their call. Schott Model 654 leather jackets for men are made with chrome-tanned, drum dyed, light weight cowhide leather. This hide has a medium to soft “hand”, a shiny finish and breaks in quick and easy. Our light weight cowhide is processed to provide many years of use without the need for treatments or conditioners. The Cafe racer model 654 moto jacket was designed for warmer weather riding or hitting the local club…you decide.

Schott NYC uses this semi aniline cowhide to help your leather jacket or “second skin” resist the elements. Motorcycle jackets need to be as tough as the people wearing them. You will enjoy the benefits of both stain resistance and added protection while riding on your classic motorbike or out on the town. Nickel plated brass hardware complete this timeless American made classic that is built to last.

As with all Perfecto® leather jackets, Schott only uses the best, highest quality leather available. In the same tradition used in the 50's, highly skilled workers hand-cut each panel for the 654. In keeping with their original custom style, Schott designed this jacket to fit tighter than most for that classic bold and streamlined look. We suggest you carefully check our sizing diagrams and measurements to determine best fit. Also please note that the absence of bi-swing panels and underarm footballs combined with Schott’s tighter cut arms make this a slim fitting jacket.

The Schott Model #654 is proudly made in the U.S.A. Our customers know that the quality and construction of our jackets are unparalleled. From the heavyweight nylon thread we use to the strong American hands that do the crafting. We build our leather motorcycle jackets to the same indestructible standards as the old style leather medicine balls. One-hundred plus years of being the best is your assurance that Schott Brothers stands behind every jacket we make.

SUCH A GOOD LOOKING JACKET. I REGRET SWITCHING TO A DIFFERENT JACKET.

Published: Sat, 3/18/2023 by Thomas Tissiman

I originally ordered this jacket in a small
and was a bit too big. I went to the LA store and was having an issue finding my size in a jacket. They had this jacket in a extra small and it fit really good, but was not in good condition and they said they needed to condition it. Then I tried the vintage 654, which was an amazing jacket, unfortunately the sleeve length was too small, in a medium and the small. Then I was deciding between other jackets and went with the 554. I kind of regret it because the sleeve width is a bit baggy on me and already is marked final sale and I took the tags off but still have them. The 654 is an amazing jacket and should have just ordered it in an extra small, or maybe kept the small. Schott NYC has the best looking jackets I have ever seen, although if you are thin, then it can be a challenge finding the right size. Make sure if you purchase a jacket from here, you calculate your measurements correctly, because these jackets all fit differently and are either a slim fit or regular.

BEAUTIFUL, SLIMMER, NOT AS GLOSSY AS IT LOOKS (A GOOD THING), STIFF AT FIRST

Published: Fri, 3/26/2021 by Robyn in SoCal

I have been looking for this jacket for years after I found it in a men's store that only carried a small. A year after, I mistakenly bought the wrong model: 654VN. The vintage is a beautiful jacket, to be sure, but because of the vintaging process, the sizing/fit is a bit uneven across the jacket so I ultimately decided to buy the one I had originally tried on: the 654.

I was right: the jacket falls beautifully from the neck down to the edge of your shoulders, and from the clavicle down through your abdomen (while open). If you're slimmer (5'7", 130 lbs), this is the jacket for you. It will not look boxy, and, if you got the right size, will close comfortably without any pull across the upper chest. The jacket is very stiff at first, but it's cowhide and you're supposed to have this for years. After 1-2 years, it'll feel more like its built for my body.

The jacket also isn't as glossy as the images look. Can't figure out why Schott pictures on the website don't truly show the color. Anyway, they always look better in person. Fixtures are beautiful and have a lifetime warranty.

I bought two of the same size for comparison because it's leather and each jacket will fit differently. I settled on one that had a more even texture, fell on my body better.

If you're a slimmer guy, average or just below average height and don't have insanely broad shoulders, this jacket will look beautiful. Denise was also helpful with questions!

Beautiful coat, wonderful craftsmanship. The only complaint i have is that the lining is polyester, for the price something more natural would be nice, at this point im nitpicking though.

    ANOTHER FANTASTIC PRODUCT FROM SCHOTT

Published: Thu, 10/15/2020 by John E Stansfield

I overcame my wife's objection ("Oh no. Not another black leather jacket!") and I'm glad I did. Great leather, perfect fit, and speedy free overnight delivery. I couldn't be more pleased with the whole experience! Know that while the styling is definitely motorcycle, this jacket is more of a casual wear about town piece. No shoulder gussets make for a slim trim profile at the expense of performance on a bike for example.

    NO MAGIC IN THIS WORLD...

    Published: Sat, 8/22/2020 by O.P.

Just received my jacket. Unfortunately... once again - no magic in this world. You get what you paid for. I have tried all kinds of cafe racer style jackets from many manufacturers, and SchottNYC is still the best you can get. Pricey, but again... you get what you paid for. Simply top notch.
If this can help someone... I am 6'2/220 lbs, 45 inch chest, 33 inch waist, relatively long arms (36-37 dress shirt sleeves) . Ordered size L. Fits snugly (as I want it to fit) and the sleeves are about 3/4 of an inch shorter than I wanted them to be. However, the sleeves will stretch a bit over time. Should fit perfectly.

BEAUTIFUL JACKET BUT NOT FOR MOTORCYCLING

    Published: Tue, 5/12/2020 by Jake

This jacket is gorgeous. I was so disappointed that it didn't fit right for motorcycle riding. If it had gusseted arms it would have been absolutely perfect.

BREATHTAKING WELL BUILT JACKET, BUT NO SIZE FOR ME.

Published: Tue, 3/17/2020 by Scott G.

The 654 is a beauty for sure but you have to be weary on the fit. The leather is stiff and will need to be broken in, which was no problem to me. It is slim, yes, but it is also a Eruo cut which means the chest/shoulders will be small. If you are 5'7" 170lbs in athletic shape, this jacket is not for you. I feel this jacket is designed for someone who is slim with very little muscle mass. Slim doesn't necessarily mean tight fit. It means no width as well. I tried both XL and Large. Large fit my hips and waist but was too tight in the shoulders/chest and biceps. I literally couldn't move. The XL was a good fit in the shoulders and chest but everything else was too large. I have since returned both and received my 530 which was a perfect fit in Large. I wish the 654 can in an american cut with the same leather as the 530 with the bi-fold option.

    GREAT CLASSIC LEATHER JACKET.

    Published: Fri, 2/21/2020 by K-

If what you want is a classic real leather jacket this is a great product. But really only if you want specifically a classic leather jacket, there are characteristics of the jacket you should expect going in.

    1. It comes stiff as hell. It also fits a bit slim (as its supposed to). So before it breaks in, range of motion is resisted by the leather.

    2. It has that old fashion black color, I don't know exactly how to discribe it other than traditional black leather jacket color. There's like a ever so slightly yellowish tinge to it. Photos dipict it decent enough.

    3. Its not particularly warm. Leather itself is not a significant insulator and there is no other noteable lining.

    4. Its thick leather, even when broken in it won't "flow" like some suede thats been sanded/trimed. This leads to a more substancial feel imo, but its less flexable. It also weighs a decent amount.

My only complaint would probably be the arm zippers coming undone too easily. Happens just by itself too easily. But a careful spec of locktite fixed it for me.

    WONDERFUL LEATHER LACKET

    Published: Fri, 2/21/2020 by T.T.

I recently bought a black cherry casual racer leather jacket and even ordered it from Europe paying taxes and shipment cost, since I no longer live in the USA, but it was still worth it! The delivery was fast and the quality of the jacket is superb. Compared to my other Schott ( Brown delivery jacket, also size m) it is more tight fitting, so you should take the snug fit into consideration if you plan to wear layers although it is intended for wearing during spring and summer. The color is even better than in the photos and, in my opinion, more sophisticated than black and more formal than brown which means easier to dress up by wearing a shirt and a skinny tie. The jacket is really light ( approximately around 1,5 Kg) and has a soft and luxurious feeling. I love wearing it and I hope that I will keep enjoying it for years to come! Highly recommended to all interested in investing in an elegant and versatile leather jacket.

    LOVE IT

    Published: Wed, 1/1/2020 by Dominic

I have a few Schott sweaters and have been wanting a jacket for a long time. I landed on the 654 after trying many different styles. The style and feel of this jacket is timeless. The leather is a little stiff at first but breaks in quickly. The XL is the perfect size for me at 6ft. with broad shoulders and long arms. I went with the brown for a little different look as there are so many people in black leather jackets out there. The tone of the brown is deep and rich. Highly recommend.
