Just to get this out of the way upfront: This is, hands down, the best traditional style pea coat on the market!
I have been on a binge looking for a new pea coat to replace my original US Navy issue coat, from my time in service, that was lost in a move. I knew I wanted the traditional style and every company seems to have one in their lineup so the choices were nearly limitless. After looking at scores of inferior coats lining the racks of all the "modern male" type stores, I turned to the internet for advice. Two companies continually cropped up in forum discussions as making the best coats and having the most satisfied customers: Sterlingwear of Boston and Schott NYC.
Sterlingwear is the current manufacturer of US Navy issue pea coats and Schott has an incredible history with the Military manufacturing various uniform pieces through the years. Bonus: They both manufacture their pea coats in America. This was a big selling point with me along with the high quality fit and finish I was looking for.
I have a problem many times with my body size falling in between sizes so it is a problem for me to order online. This seemed to be the only way to get a Sterlingwear coat so I was hesitant to order from them. Initially the only way to get a Schott coat looked to be ordering as well, but then I found a Schott retailer close to me using the location link at the bottom the the Schott website. This allowed me to try on different coat sizes and find the best one without a lot of return shipping.
I was initially looking at the 740 classic pea coat but when i called the store they only had the 751 slim fit coat in stock. I decided to take a chance and go try one on. Boy am I glad I did! The slimmer cut fit my body type much better and reduced the bulk of the coat considerably compared to all other brands I had tried on up to this point. While being a fitted cut, the coat still gave me some room to layer clothing underneath if need be. The 24oz weight of the wool is less than the 32oz 740 classic but is still much thicker and denser than any of the mass market coats I looked at. The craftsmanship of the coat is several levels better than anything else close to this price range. Needless to say, I didn't hesitate to buy the Schott coat.
I don't think I will miss the heavier weight wool of the 740 coat and in talking with the store owner, she told me that the sales rep for Schott recommended the 751 over the 740 for the more moderate climate of our area, average winter temps being in the 40's. If you live in a harsher climate, the 740 should probably still be your first choice but I am very happy with the 751 as it is very warm even in windy conditions.
I'm sure the Sterlingwear coat is a fine piece of outerwear but I do not seeing it being any better than the Schott 751. If you are in the market for a traditional style pea coat, you will not find one better than this. Just buy It! You will not be disappointed.
Beautifully made. Quality product as usual. I’ve only bought Schott coats for the last decade simply because they hold up and the fit is always on point. I still have the first one I bought.
So I thought I wanted the Leather Trim Peacoat (Slim Fit) 740C, which has leather piping trim and red satin lining, definitely an attention-getter. That coat has a thicker fabric and is actually tailored to your suit size (e.g., 38, 40, 42, etc.). However, when I went and tried it on at the Schott store in NYC, it fits much looser around the waist/body that you'd expect for a slim fit cut. Which is disappointing as it looks really cool in person and feels so well made.
So I decided to try on their Slim Fit Peacoat 751 in Navy, which is just sized XS, S, M, L, etc., so you'd think it wouldn't fit as exact as the Leather Trim Peacoat. In fact, it fits so much better! It is actually tailored to the shape of a body, rather than boxy like a peacoat. Also, it was slightly longer (in size S) than the Leather Trim Peacoat (in size 36) and has no vent versus the Leather Trim being vented in the back. It also doesn't have the flashier bits like the leather trim or the bright red lining, which the Leather Trim Peacoat 740C has, both of which I liked. And, for some reason, even without all those details (e.g., leather, vented back, heavier fabric and red satin lining), it costs more than the Leather Trim Peacoat. I'm not sure why that is (maybe the fabric is nicer or it is harder to make a jacket that is actually shaped to the body?).
In any event, it fits like a tailored jacket and looks a bit dressier on than the Leather Trim Peacoat (by the way, that peacoat is very dark navy and looked black to me in person; this coat looks navy). Also, the lighter weight fabric made it easier to move around (that is, the fabric has "give" to it so you don't feel stiff like the other one did). So I bought the Slim Fit Peacoat 751 and am super satisfied. The store employees were very helpful as well.
I’m a pretty slim guy, at 5’10” 176lbs and I feel like I’m swimming in most coats so this was a nice cut for me. Normally I’m mediums, but I’m a little broader in the shoulders. So I ordered the medium online and while it did fit, it only fit just so. It was a little snug in the shoulders with just a t-shirt so wearing anything like a sweater underneath would have been out of the question. So I drove into the hell that is Manhattan to exchange it, and parking aside the staff at the store was beyond helpful and was more than patient with me trying on several different coats before I settled on the large. I recommend both the coat and the store to anyone.
I'm 5'7" 165lbs and medium fits me perfectly. The small was too tight.
Very nice jacket, fitted along chest and waist. The fabric is nice quality We returned the jacket because the arm openings are too tight and there is not enough room for a long sleeve shirt or sweater. If you are athletic and slim fit. This jacket is not for you. This issue is common with slim fit clothing.
Can't go hyper superlative but this is a wonderful well made in USA coat and almost as importantly the NYC Schott team were helpful and encouraging in helping me find the right coat for me. I have also bought several leather coats and they really are superb too.
Looked everywhere for a pea coat that looked traditional, but that would fit my 5' 11", 130 lb, 17 year old. This one is perfect. Classic looks and a great fit on a slimmer man.
First thing: This is a mid-weight coat perfect for Los Angeles / San Francisco winter; not Montreal. There is no question about the American made quality; this is what its all about. Very nice especially the blue & white striped lining. The big drawback would be the fit. Anytime the phrase "slim fit" is included in the description you must be on guard. Who is "slim fit"made for? Definitely not the average person. In most brands I wear an XL.. In suit coats I wear a 48R but for this coat I need to move up to a 3xl. Even then, the arms, at the shoulders, seem slightly restricted. The extra injury to me is that I have to pay an extra $60 premium for 3xl and it doesn't live up to the price. SLIM FIT is for stick figures.~~~However, I haven't given up. I will change styles to a relaxed fit, lose the blue and white lining (which I loved) and resume a normal life.
I chose a large and only just fitted into it
But after spending NZD 1000.00 to get it
Cost, shipping, taxes
That was it I'll live with the tight shoulders
A compromise for online purchases, but I'm happy
I'm 6'3" and wear a 44R coat....usually. I have an "athletic" physique, but slipping just a tad. I bought this coat in a Large and it fits perfect! I like to layer and with a sweater now and then, so I do have to say it can get snug, but is comfortable. With a tee underneath fantastic. The build is well made and will keep you warm.
Extremely happy with this purchase. I probably write one review every couple years on things, but this definitely deserves recognition.
Oh, and fast delivery.....so there's that as well.
This is a great coat. I wear a 39R in a dress coat and a 31 in pants. I'm 6 feet about 160 lbs and the medium fits best. I know this because I tried a small and large as well. The chest in all of the coats is slightly restrictive, but this is a more update version of the pea coat and it's supposed to fit that way. Schott was able to email me the specs of the coat to insure I got the proper fit. The lining is very nice. I totally recommend this company and the coat is spectacular. They were willing to send and resend me various sizes until I was happy.
