Both horsehide and cowhide are very durable leathers. All our motorcycle jackets are the same heavy weight and thickness. The naked cowhide does not have a finish which allows the natural oils of the hide to surface and condition the leather and has a softer hand. Our steerhide has a finish applied to the leather and has a rigid hand. The horsehide is much shiner in appearance and a much stiffer hand. All jackets must be broken in with the horsehide taking a longer time to become broken-in. Each will become unique as they become worn and broken-in. gail

in what applications would you recommend horshide over steerhide or cowhide? Does one have more weather resistance, or provide more warmth? Is one heavier weight than the other?

As I posted previously both are the same weight and thickness. Because the horsehide has a very shiney finish and a very stiff hand it may feel heavier and give the appearnce of added resistance to weather conditions. Both leathers will provide the same warmth, and as with any leather should not intentionally be worn in rain, causing the leather to be soaked. The choice of leather is really a personal preference. Both leathers will provide many years of wear and protection, but as with any item it also must be cared for. Gail
