Schott Bell 60 Year Jacket - Why so cheap right now?

Hi all, first post here. I just bought a Schott 530 yesterday, and really liked the quality of it, so I was browsing online and found another good looking jacket. But it's incomprehensibly cheap.

It's a collaboration between Schott and Bell, called the 60 Year Jacket, and it retails for 900.

It's well reviewed on RevZilla, and was featured in a few publications, but right now several vendors are selling it from 599 to 430. Why the huge markdown? I understand it runs a little small, and may not fit people with larger frames, but it's a limited edition (only 250 pieces, each individually numbered, made of horsehide, and moto ready). Quite a few people are trying to sell theirs on ebay as well.

Does anyone have any input? Defects? Problems?

Good grief 45 of them are for sale on eBay plus the other websites you listed that must account for most of the total made. Maybe they're more for fashion rather than protection.

I know, right? You'd figure that them being a limited edition would make value increase over time too! Anyways, I actually bought one out of curiosity, and I could sell it back at cost I'm sure. When I called multiple vendors (all of which sold motorcycle gear), they consistently said they were discounted because they were discontinued (even though that's the point of "limited edition"). Revzilla in particular mentioned that it's a very protective motorcycle jacket, sans armor though. Makes no sense

Wow definitely something to watch it looks like someone on eBay bought a bunch and is trying to get full retail back out of them. I like the jacket especially with your information on one so I'll be looking for a bargain on one my size. Thanks.

This jacket was Bell Helmets Anniversary style for their anniversary year 1954. It was a collaboration of the Perfecto and the private Bell labels for the style #B1954H. The jacket was produced in 2014 in heavy Horsehde leather from Italy. The jacket when new retailed around $850-$1000, as a private label jacket Schott does not control the pricing. It appears the jackets now being sold are "New"/"Old" stock, maybe in only limited sizing available. At some point even limited edition jackets if not sold when initially offered will be discounted. Possibly many people were not as familar or wanted a jacket with the Bell Helmet's name as say a limited edition jacket for Harley Davidson, Suzuki or even Schott. At some point everything will be sold, and not all limited editions will hold or increase in value, they have to be in demand and become a collector's item for value to increase.

I guess the main question is... is the jacket up to Schott's standards of quality, and made in the USA?

Gail on 06/29/16 at 07:39 AM

The jacket was made in our US factory and the highest quality of materials were used in this jacket. The horsehide leather is the same quality and weight we use in our horsehide styles we offer in our line. The jacket was being sold at $850-$1000 when being sold by Bell Helmet, the discounted price now is just stock that did not sell and is being discounted.

That's great news one of these jackets is definitely being added to my very long list of leathers I want to own and wear before I die. :)

Gail can you tell me if 250 jackets in total were made or 250 per size?

Thanks, David

Gail on 10/01/16 at 08:19 AM

David,

I can tell you that 250 pieces per size were not made, but possibly the entire Limited production was 250 pieces. Unfortunately I do not have the information to confirm the size of the production lot. If I am able to locate the amount of jacket made in 2014 for this jacket I will follow-up with an additional post.

A update on the Bell Helmet jacket style B1954H. The special anniversary limited edition edition production was 244 number pieces, which means each jacket was numbered. The first 20 pieces made were made for management, so if your jacket is 1-20 it was a jacket from someone in management.

Good to know thanks Gail! One of these jackets is definitely on my bucket list although my spouse is starting to be concerned about the number of jackets I own. ;)

I just recevied my Jacket today, I can confirm that this jacket is legit! My chest is 46, 48 expanded, I wear a 36 in the waist, the xxl fits like a glove, a little tight InThe biceps area , but not bad and I'm sure it'll break in nicely. Heads up, I got this at motorcyclecloseouts.com, if you go to their website and click on your size it might say it's out of stock, don't believe it! I was checking everyday and the web tool wouldn't let me select xl or xxl, says they were out of stock. Well one day it let me choose, I hurried up and chose xxl, not really sure about the size. Anyway I ordered the jacket, but 5 minutes later thought I better change it to xl . I went back to the website and wouldn't you know it, no xl or xxl!  So I called them, they told me that they had both jackets In stock and didn't know why their website said otherwise. And when I got my jacket if it didn't fit, they would exchange it. So, don't hesitate if your the least bit interested this jacket is a steal, it's worth all the $900 retail, at $450 ....it's a UNICORN! I'm retired military and seeing all the crap coming out of Pakistan led me to Schott, honestly I had no idea, but now I know, and once you know you can't unknow. Thanks for being there Schott! Btw mine is number125 out of 244, not 250, (Thanks Gail!) oh yeah I almost forgot I sent a message to a vendor on eBay asking him why he was selling the jacket at $900 when Bell had them on closeout for half that, I received a message back stating that if I wanted to order one he'd look into matching the price, so it can be done!
