Purpose of pockets on standard motorcycle jacket?

I'm very curious. I wear my leather jacket a lot and I've put all sorts of stuff in my pockets. While you can vaguely clump this all together as "holding sh*t", is there a specific reason for the design and placement of the pockets on a motorcycle jacket other than fashion?

Thank you

To be honest I am not completely sure, the two lower I suppose were used as other bottom pockets as hand warmers when a person was not riding. The zippers on the pockets were to secure any items placed in the pockets from falling out when riding. The top pocket as much as I hate to say it, I believe it was used to hold cigarettes or possibly a lighter. You have to remember the motorcycle jacket was first designed by Schott in 1927 when smoking was popular and customary. The small snap flap pocket is referred to as the coin pocket, once again easy access to money and in 1927, the 30's, 40's and even the 50's you could buy a lot with just change.
