how to spot a fake?

hi, I am sorry to bother you with a question I imagine you get hundreds of times.

I have been scanning the whole web, plus this forum, and other ones with passionate people like yourselves who discuss quality and authenticiy of vintage and contemporary schott perfecto jackets, but no luck.

I just received a superb jacket from an ebay french seller. at first sight it seems authentic in every detail but I then realized there is no label whatsoever, not even in the coin pocket (never seen a coin pocket like this one, btw), that the metal fittings are a bit weird, that the perfecto inside-sewed logo appears nowhere else in the web. so I am doubting and keeping my fingers crossed.

should you need more pics, I will be happy to take some. thanks for helping.

I noticed a few months ago after going to a website for a French distributor of Schott jackets that many of the M/C jackets are not made in the U.S.  That is the case with this jacket, it's authentic Schott but made in China.  The overall quality of these jackets is very good, I own a few prototypes that are designed by Schott but made in China.  But if you are looking for Union made in the USA this is not your jacket.

thank you so much, wolverine. I had read something here

on the forum but was not sure about having understood correctly this difference between made in usa products and production for european market that is made in china. the leather appears to be a medium/high quality but I imagine the american one to be much softer. it's a pity as it's my first one, been longing for the colour I wanted for ages and finally found it on the bay. will try to find another one from the u.s. to spot the differences in leather, I love this jacket, would want to buy all colors ever made. thanks again :)

Authentic Schott made in China!! THIS DOES NOT MAKE ME FEEL GOOD!!

The retail price on these jackets offered in France and made in China are quite a bit lower than jackets made in the U.S. So I would think that is a major reason why they are doing it.  I'm pretty sure there are still jackets distributed in France that are U.S. Made.  The type of leather that I have seen with these made in China jackets seems to be good but it will be interesting to read what Gail has to say...bottom line is that if you like the jacket and it was not too expensive then keep it.  You need to be careful about buying Schott online and especially on EBay since sometimes you find jackets that were made in China but the seller lists them as made in the U.S.  If you are ever in doubt this forum is an excellent place to get a straight answer but it can take a day or two especially if you ask over a weekend.

thanks again for helping, that's really useful for me. thing is, I discovered the forum right after receiving the parcel, as I started looking for labels that I didn't find anywhere. I would have asked, of course, if only I had known there was such an expertise available for help. yes I like it a lot, I like the colour and the model, I believe the leather is a bit heavy but to be sure I should compare it with a made in u.s. one. for what I paid (150€ plus 24 shipping) I think I can keep it. furthermore, the seller didn't mention any «made in usa» on the auction text, so I would have no justification to open a case. I think I'll keep it, but definitely will buy an american one as soon as I'm back to the states, probably here on the website.

thanks for your patience, I appreciate it a lot!

Our European distributors do offer imported jackets that they feel will sell well in their countries based on styling and price. The jackets are approved by Schott for quality and workmanship. In Europe it is not required to have a label of origin, whereas in the US everything that is sold must have a label of origin. Unfortunately because a label of origin is lacking in the jackets, many people assume it was produced and offered in the US. The laws of each country we can not change, but from your post you seem to like the jacket so enjoy your purchase. If you check our website jackets you will see some jackets are also listed as imported styles, but in the US the jackwts must be labeled as such with the name of the country.

thank you gail, I've read tons of your answers on this forum before asking for help myself.

my main concern was that there is a whole market selling total fakes, so as long as those manufacturers are licensed by schott, I'm fine: I would not want to have a fake in my closet.

as said before, next trip to the u.s. I will buy on the website and have it delivered to ca.

thanks for your precious help in the forum.

All our distributors are licensed to sell Schott outerwear and accesoories. All our international distributors are listed on our website with their contact information. If you are unsure about a European jacket you can contact them for confirmation on the style.
