How to identify original Schott jacket

Good morning everybody.I kindly ask an help. I'm going to buy a second hand Schott leather jacket. In a shop in Italy I have found two leather jackets second hand with following characteristics. Could anybody help me in identifying if they are original Schott jackets or not? I could not take any picture. Say Jacket a) very similar to Schott A-2 model: On the top of internal pile liner there is the black lable with ''Schott'' written in white characters, on the right side of this lable there is a smaller white one with the american flag and in the line below the flag there is the nbr 54. Under the internal pile, I mean on the lining, there are no lables. On the back side of the zipper slider is written YKK US N. On metal hardware is written ''Schott''. Inside the front left pocket there is a small white label with following nbrs: 2024 628 654SM 54 Say Jacket B) exactly the same as jacket before but with following numbers on a white lable inside the front left pocket: 1522612036 54 101 684 SM Thanks a lot in advance if any body could help me. Both jackets are the Schott style 684SM and are in the US size 54. On the first set of numbers I believe the style number 654SM is really reading 684SM, and the lot #2024 means the jacket was made between the mid-1980's to 1992. The second jacket has a bar code which means the jacket was made after 1992. The last year we offered the Steerhide version of this jacket in our line was in 1991, though we did continue to make special production for our European distributors in the steerhide leather style 684SM. Based on the bar code and the 5th. number of the bar code being a "6" I would say this jacket was made in 1996. Gail

Hi everybody! I was not able to decide which one of the two Schott (Ihope) jackets to buy. The black one or the brown one? I decided to buy the two. Unfortunately the both jackets have not any internal lable with series, bundle nbrs, etc. Following a very short description of the both. Black Jacket: metal hardware stainless steel color, on the internal liner, the one under the pile I mean, there is not ''Schott''repeated many times, the liner is simply black. Brown Jacket: metal hardware brown color, the internal liner with ''Schott'' written many many time. I added some pictures. Could any of you help me in telling me something more about these two fantastic jackets? Are they original Schott leather Jackets? Thanks in advance for your comments. M.

Good afternoon Gail, sorry to burden you, could you please suggest me some product (wax, or others)to treat my two ''new'' second hand Schott (I hope they are original)that I bought today? Thanks in advance. M.

I have already cnfirmed thatbbith these jackts are Schott jackets, please see my first post to you on the styles, with all the information I can supple to you based on what you have sent to confirmthe styles. In reference to any used jacke I always recommend that used jackets be professionally cleaned. Haing the jacket professionally cleaned removes the dirt and sweat from previous owners and also prevents the linings and stitching from deteriorating from the dirt and sweat. Once the jacket is professionally cleaned you can maintain the leather with Saddle Soap, never apply a product that water proofs leather or conatind a silicone as this will cause the leather to seal and dry rot. Thanks a lot Gail! I will follow your suggestions and in the next few days I will have them professionally cleaned. I apologize, maybe I misunderstood your last reply. Actually the two jackets I bought are not those ones of my first post. The Jackets of my first post had their labels with codes, numbers, style, etc. and you gave me your clarifications. The two I bought (my post with pictures) have not labels with style and identification lot nbr. etc., for these reason I asked for another evaluation. Do you confirm me that they (those of the pictures) are 684 style? Period of production ? Thank you very much again and best regards. M.

The jackets appear to be the style 684SM in the Steerhide leather as the steerhide leather was more popular in Europe, but there is also the possibility one or both could be the 184SM in the Naked Cowhide leather. About the only thing I can go on to help with dating the jackets are the linings. In the brown jacket it apears the body lining is Gold and the other jacket has the "Schott" logo lining, the plain Gold lining was used early -mid 1980's, logo linings were used late to early 1990's. Unfortunately that is all I can tell you on the jackets, during the mid-1980's into the 1990's this style was very popular in Europe and we shipped thousands of these jackets each year to our european distributor. I can confirmthey re Schott jackets and they are vintage jackets I just cannot narrow down the years any better. Gail

Last question Gail: in case my jackets are Naked Cowhide may I use also in this case Saddle Soap? Thanks in advance and best regards. M.

Gail on 10/01/14 at 09:02 PM

Saddle soap can be used on Naked cowhide but you should always test as it can darken the leather. If you are having the jackets professionally cleaned there would be n need to use any product on them for some time. Saddle soap used spareingly on a jacket removes light surface dirt. Gail

Good afternoon Gail. I followed your suggestion and I had my two (684s or 184s?) professionally cleaned and the result is great! They look excellent, the touch of the cowhide or steerhide (?) is very very soft. These fantastic jackets even do some typical noise (noise?) when I ware them and I do some movement. And they fit perfectly to me. Thanks again for helping us with your precious suggestions. M.
