We first produced this style in 1972 in a Steerhide leather with a Synthetic curly pile lining and was our style #617. In the years 1973 & 1974 we continued to produce the style in a Polyurethane Synthetic leather and was our style #517. I tried to view the photos to determine if this was a genuine leather or polyurethane leather and I honestly can not determine by photos. Possibly you can confirm as you can see & feel the shell of the jacket. If you are unsure, you can open the lining slightly to check for the roughout side of the steerhide leather. Just to note on the 517 they may have used actually Steerhide leather for the straps on the jacket. The Retro Crest main label confirms the age as we used this particular label in the 70's, this jacket whether the 617 or 517 arround 45 years old.

Thanks Gail! Are the synthetic versions worth substantially less than the steerhide? It is in fantastic condition to be almost 50 years old.

Here's another close pic of the exterior.

It is really so difficult to tell by a photo if the jacket is a genuine steerhide leather or a man-made material. A genuine leather article is always more expensive then a man-made product. Think of the cost of a pair of leather shoes or gloves to a material that appears to look like leather. The jacket is in excellent condition for it's age and hardly looks like it has been worn at all. My only suggestion since I can not physically see the jacket is to take the jacket to a retailer that deals with leather and ask him. If you are able to confirm if the jacket is real leather or not can you please post an update as I too am very curious and wish I could inspect it myself.
