A serious heavyweight contender.
This is an great piece - heavy duty and wears more like a jacket than a sweater. I bought it to wear like a liner under my jackets, but it may prove to be a bit too warm and heavy for that. It has to be the thickest, heaviest sweater I've ever seen. The cuffs and collar and waist band are two ply thick. Wrist gussets and trim are nylon. And the zippers are beefy nylon with metal Schott pulls and riveted leather pull-tabs. Like I said, more like a jacket and I can easily see wearing it on a ride.
To shoot you straight, it is a bit itchy if worn with just a t-shirt (probably due to the fact that it's 80% lambs wool and 20% nylon) - so count on wearing a long sleeve shirt under it. The fit was great - I'm 6'1", 'bout 160 lbs and wear a 42 long in a suit (on rare occasions), and a size Medium fit like a glove. Tailored, slim fit but still had plenty of length.
The collar is tall, taller than a standard cafe racer collar and does not fold - so count on it being up all the time. Schott's photo makes the color look a little gray and worn-in, but in actuality it is pitch black and looks brand new.
For those wondering, the sleeve patch is a dark charcoal gray circle and reads in black "Schott Bros. Inc. U.S.M.C. NYC 1913" and has a winged star in the middle. It's rather subtle, but not necessary and I could easily do without it - but it does not seriously detract from the coolness of the piece. It is "imported" meaning made in China - but the quality still seems to be top-notch (but time will tell, right?).
All said - I think I really dig it and it will be a nice addition when you want to temporarily shed the leather. I'd give it five stars, but that's reserved for cream of the crop, knock your socks off, have it for a lifetime pieces. Due to the fact that it is "imported" and has the patch, this one gets 4 stars - which is still way above average in my book. The price is fair for such a hefty piece and Schott's customer service and shipping rocked (as usual) - received it within a couple of days.
Rock on and ride safe.
